Lifebuoy Light Battery Replacement

Just starting to check over all the gear before the season, including checking batteries & spares.

Just wondered how often people replace the batteries in their lifebuoy dans?
Aulthough in theory they've never been really used, I know they can get activated for afew seconds when taking the lifebuoy on & off the boat / tips away from vertical in the car etc...and if I have to depoly the lifebouy I wouldn't want to have dud batteries on the light so I replace with new every year. Is this common?

Then what to do with 5 (probably) perfectly good D batteries?

BTW I would replace after use if I did deploy the thing.
