Lost Islands

Here are details of a book that members may find interesting:

LOST ISLANDS - The story of islands that have vanished from nautical charts.

By Henry Stommel

Published by University of British Colombia Press, Vancouver
ISBN 0-7748-0210-3

It does exactly what it says on the cover! It is the story of islands that are known to have existed but have now disappeared from the charts, islands that never existed but are still on the charts, islands that are not where the charts say they are etc...

An interesting book for those who navigate, and those like me who do not venture from the sight of land.

Interesting point of "view"

I really would like to take a look at this book. Especially regarding the Aegean Sea.

Here is another fascinating book that may be of interest:

'LONGITUDE - The story of a lone genius who solved the greatest scientific problem of his time' (Snappy title eh!)

Author: David SOBEL
ISBN: 1-85702-571-7
Published in paperback 1996 by Fourth Estate Ltd, 6 Salem Road, London W2 4BU

It is the story of John Harrison the self taught watchmaker who invented the first true chronometer. You just wouldn't believe the people in the scientific world who tried to stop him.

I suppose that every one who has ever used a chart or even a gps owes Harrison a debt of gratitude. Well written and an interesting story.

Hi there

I will send my copy of LONGITUDE, free, to the first person who sends me an e-mail. All I would suggest is when that person has read it they send it to someone else in the forum.

Hi there

There is NO catch. It's just a paperback book, nautical theme, very interesting and FREE (not even postage). Just send me an e-mail and I will post it to you (whoever) anywhere in the world.

Why? Because that's the kind of guy I am!
