Marine Orders
Just thought I would share this with you all as I always appreciate a company who provides good service. I ordered my new hand-held VHF Icom IC-M21 on Saturday evening online from Cactusnav(minus the VAT of course, nyah, nyah!). This was delivered to my front door this morning in Jersey - I am impressed.

I know that Manos, you missed the point. Some companies debit your card and take forever posting your goods. I was merely highlighting the fact that this company was extremely efficient, and I always appreciate that.

Aye, a lot of companies take forever to get the stuff out of their warehouse, but tend to be quick on getting the payment sorted. Ordering on saturday and getting it by tuesday, especially to the channel islands, is certainly decent service.
I might even use them to get myself a VHF when the time comes, so cheers for that Charles.
Matt

Charles, How come no VAT, was it because of export or that you live in Jersey (where petrol is nearly free) and we could all afford to run twin 250 mariners......
When do you get the Rib back???

Hiya Tim... anything mailed to the Channel Islands is regarded as an export from the UK. The Channel Islands are a VAT free area, so as long as a company can prove they have sent it here, VAT is not applicable the same applies to fuel, the duty is less than half the UK's prices, saying that, I will investigate putting 2 x 200hp Yamaha 4 strokes on the back of my rib in the not too distant future.
I am collecting my rib from Lymington some time next week. I am hoping for a reasonable weather window as this is unfinished business!!
Manos, no offence taken whatsoever

Charles,
Didn't you originally order this from MarineForce? What happened - I thought that they promised delivery in spite of going into administration?

You are correct Richard. I have heard or seen nothing, so ordered it from Catusnav.

More praise for good service
I ordered a tarp through Towsure ( www.towsure.co.uk)'s online shop as a stop gap until I can get a proper cover made up. Ordered Tuesday and its just arrived today!
Maybe we need a RIB.NET good service award?!
Alan

Charles,
You give the example where it is vat free, but does that only apply to permanant residents of the CI's.
It cant apply to us on the mainland having boats / engines delivered to the CI's for fitting to a boat there and rtn for use around the mainland.
Surely thats at least a grey line for the Inland Revenue.
Anyone know if thats at all feasable?
Tiger

Tiger, anything brought into the main land will be subject to VAT if VAT hasn't been paid previously.
Even if you were to buy second hand you would have to pay VAT on the current value on bringing it back

Hmmm....there are ways and means, all legal (well sort of). Someone here could purchase, say a VHF radio for you, minus the VAT of course, next time he is over your way he could simply bring it along.

Along the lines of someone over here sends you a Christmas present of something like 200 quid, and you send them a Christmas present like a VHF then?

Vat free
I worked in the marina for a few seasons in St Helier and it is surprising how many "ships spares" arrived at our office for delivery to boats arriving in the near future. I know from chatting to a few of the yachties that they had the VAT taken off their orders because the delivery address was outside mainland UK.
Some "spares" included, new tenders, vhf's, radar units, chart plotters etc etc.
I think it is only a grey area when returning to the UK if customs decide to check over the boat? But how likely that is, is surely doubtful?
Cheers
Karl
