Marine Survey Costs

I've had a letter from my insurer saying I may need a full marine survey as my hull is over 25 years old. I'm not too happy as anybody with an ounce of sense can see its in good condition, engine only has 30 hrs, tubes are fine (and not anywhere near that age) etc. and I don't want to have to pay somebody every year to tell me the same.

In case it goes that way, does anybody have any ideas how much a "full marine survey" for a 5.3m rib would cost? If I can argue that the cost outweighs the gains, then they may leave me alone for a while.

Where are you in the country? Duncan (username Searider) is our friendly forum surveyor.

personally I'd shop around and see if all insurers share the same view. Id be surprised if the insist on it if the boat is kept ashore, and even then I think 5 yrs is more normal than annual.

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately I'm down on the south coast.

Prices vary widely depending on how experienced and busy a surveyor is.

Have a look on Marine Surveyors & Marine Designers for a surveyor near you.
For the keenest price I'd look at affiliate grade members - they will be perfectly competent but not so senior that they demand high fees.

Insurers vary on their policy as to when they want a survey. 25 years seems reasonable and they won't want a survey more often than every 5 years.
They are simply trying to ensure they aren't insuring basket cases.
