Mariner 25hp

Am trying to find out the age of the Mariner 25 that was with my SR 4M when I got it. I have been told several times that the last two numbers in the serial number give the year of manufacture ? The serial number on the plate is 648 L 380525 the only other number is below the Mariner name and is :-W25ML. Can anyone give me some idea of the year this motor was made (there are some pics on my page)

At a brief guess I'd say very early 80's. it's a sandshin engine built by Yamaha and its pre thru prop exhaust.

Your engine is Yamaha based, on the ser plate in the bottom right corner is a single letter w,x,y etc . Each letter is a year which you can look up google or previous ribnet posts.

Many thanks, I got round to running the engine up today for the first time, its been stuck in the back of my workshop since I got the boat home a year ago. It started on the third pull and after the initial bit of smoke (due to heavy oil mix) it ran as sweet as a nut. The people that I got the rib from said that the motor had not been used since its last service and it certainly looks and runs well. All I need to do now is get the few jobs done on the hull that need doing and then I can get her in the water (probably on the Solway Firth) and see what she handles like. i might even get some cod fishing in before the winter sets in.
