Please remember that Jean has worked hard on this and that there are a number of retailers with tenders, just because we are no longer in the running is no reason to undo all of that work.

Well said

The baseline price I think has always been MSS at 189, perhaps now there is a firm number (14?) they can be beaten down a smidge moor. Obviously all that is said with no knowledge of what prices Jean got from others.

At least we can do the floaty pouches without undue paperwork, deliveries under 18 quid are not worth the revenue's time; so say Guernsey Post who are wise in the ways.

Martin, don't suppose your supplier does one that fits the very popular standard horizon handheld (270?)?

How about a RIBnet cruise over to you to pick them up?
Or meet on the water wearing clumbo rain coats, deer stalker hats and sunglasses? Although the police have bared me from wearing such clothing I'm sure someone could do it.

Its a right royal bummer and I did give Martin a bit of an ear full (sorry Martin) - but in all honesty it's as much my fault for not thinking to check or clarify the issue on duty - bloody annoyed at myself for wasting everyones time - apologies to all.

However - I'm not going to let this die - so Willk put your bag of popcorn away please - the cheapest is MSS at £189 but please remember this was pre vat change.

Will continue making calls over the next few days and see what I can do - on the positive side we have clearly got enough people willing to commit if the price is right and we now know the region that needs to be in - so currently I believe that's a first for RIBnet - now all I have to do is find some!!!!!

I'll make the assumption that all are pulling out of the current offer and post a new price if and when I find one appropriate - give me till the end of Jan then I'll admit defeat

Martin - will offer the carry pouch once we get to a purchasing stage - would you still like me to organise and collect monies and can you confirm price and postage. Picking up on JSP's covert suggestion - I'm assuming you bringing them over in March (Sea Survival course) for me to ship from the UK would be just as naughty - or is there a workable/legal solution in here somewhere regarding import duty??

There is nothing naughty about buying goods from the Channel Islands, indeed there is a very successful company called Aceparts her in Alderney (www.xenons.biz) who inspired us to offer a range of boating equipment at vat-free and uk-delivery inclusive prices ourselves.

A number of problems do present themselves though, even if you collect goods yourself or have them transported by a friend HMRC can still charge you. Even if you have a vat-paid receipt to show that duty is not due. There are various ways around this, but I am obliged not to discuss them in a public forum. Not because they are illegal but because they form the basis of several business strategies.

Regarding our own VAT status, when we moved from Kent we asked HMRC if we could stay registered; they said yes but we had to keep an address in England so we did. It then became clear that customers could be charged twice for duty, no matter how solid the paper work was the position was not negotiable. We then tried to de-register and were told that we could not as our turnover was too great, so we closed our mainland address.

The problem, I believe, is that all the imports that come in from places like China as a result of ever growing eBay sales has caused a huge problem for the treasury, I am sure we all know The Revenue's job is to find and plug such back doors in the economy. The Channel Islands are generally not considered such a "back door", but there is a chance that an over zealous Post Office employee who just read the latest Revenue memo will exercise their power on behalf of the Excise Man.

Just so long as you fly your Q flag when you return to the slipway.

Malthouse- cant you sell them to us for less then £18 - problem solved ! And we can just 'give' you some cash for being a nice chap ?

Or I'm thinking buy this off ebay - the warm feeling of safety - even if useless !

Update

Okay all - quick update and not great news unfortunately

According to at least three sellers the price is due to increase at the end of this week by £10.00

Marine Superstore have also confirmed this and the best they can now offer - excluding postage is £195.00

I do have a few more to return calls but many (as previously discovered) will not offer any discount regardless of order number.

So the options currently:

1. Hope someone else comes back with a cracking deal!!

2. Accept the fact - we can't get a good price

3. Go with Martin and run the slight risk that Import Duty maybe charged (even if incurred this will still be the same as MSS inc postage)

4. Someone else have a bright idea!!

Let me know your thoughts - Martin is well versed in shipping stuff to the UK and is aware of all the rules and regulations and their implications - however there is no guarantee that you will not incur some level of import duty.

All in all very frustrating

J

Thanks Ian - much appreciated

Collectively we need to make a decision - god help us

We can choose to buy from a UK supplier - the price will be between £202 - £205 or we can buy through Martin for £179 with special delivery and warrenty and proof of purchase (emailed or posted ) but run the risk of Import Duty taking the price to £215 (this would be the maximum price assuming they valued it correctly and include Royal Mail handling charge )

My personal feelings having tried hard to get a good price everywhere else would be Alderney Marine - so over to you all

Just to clarify - please don't feel obliged to buy - I've had plenty of time on my hands and enjoyed the challenge and if we decide not to go through with this it's no big deal and will of course allow Willks to enjoy his popcorn

Martin please feel free to add anything if needed

McMurdo Fastfind PLB 210 w/GPS £179 inc Special Delivery, warrenty and proof of purchase but excluding possible Import Duty

Knot Yet x 1

As an alternative

McMurdo Fastfind PLB 210 w/GPS £193 inc VAT - collection from Southampton or postage extra - valid for 24hrs

This is not really my area but I spoke to one of our trade suppliers in passing.

£193 inc VAT delivered to my office in Southampton.

Locals could collect, rest posted on at cost.

No mention of an imminent price rise, however quotes are only valid for 24 hrs.
