Well, at the risk of sounding like a complete smart-arse, I've always found it beneficial to consult paper charts of areas I'm unfamiliar with before venturing forth - part of the passage planning process if you like, along with tide tables, weather, local cruising guides, etc.
Having said that, I used to have a house in Port Dinorwic so the 5 knot limit is a well-known local feature but then again, so are the rocks in the Swellies but you'd be amazed how many vessels get towed into PD with knackered sterngear because they've hit one of them.
