Mercury 75hp 2 stroke no tell tale anywhere?

Hi all,

Ive recently bought a used 75hp mercury 2 stroke engine. Had it in storage for a few months and finally mounted it on the rib today. All fired up well and sounded lovely but with one problem that i cant understand......

There is no tell tale hose and outlet anywhere on the engine as if its been removed. There is a hole in the bottom cowling where it should be but its not there.
When running, it ejects water from the prop and around the muffs but doesnt appear from ANYWHERE else like its been sealed off or something..

Anyone got any ideas?

Its a 1995 engine with serial number 09844099

I have a service manual but there is no info on the tell tale in it.

Help please!!

Thanks in advance

Paul

Hi Paul, have you had a look at the parts manual for your outboard and traced where the missing tube should lead from the telltale port to see if it has indeed been blocked off at the other end?

Ive looked in the manual but there is nothing clear as to where the pipe should connect.

Are you looking in the parts manual as opposed to the service one? Just a thought but the exploded diagrams tend to be clearer. What model is the engine, there seem to be several versions of the 75.

Edit: found it. That isn't a blocked off power trim tube port you're looking at is it? https://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...75412RB/554_30

Open the engine cowl. You should be able to see the water jacket at the side of the engine. May have disconnected pipe to telltale but can't see why? Rubber pipe simply hasn't disconnected and loose? Get some pictures up.

When was the impeller last done?

I have had this problem before. Run the engine with the cover off (make sure it's connected to or in water) and you will see the water shooting out that's your tell take probably just disconnected to the hose.

Just another thought. If you are running it of a hose at home make sure you have A LOT of water pressure. Mine can only trickle out when on a hose pipe, but blasts when submerged in the sea.
My mate was worried and thought his was broken. Turned out it was all the family having showers after a day on the sea. The water pressure at home had just dropped. 😀

My 75 clam-shell tell tail didn't flow but a pipe cleaner stuffed up it sorted it out and it ran like a pressure washer after that.
