If there is any truth in any of it I would stay at home. I have nothing against the organisers but I cannot understand why all the secrecy, it just doesn't make sense. Alan P

irrespective of what happens with the Venture Cup - there will be a minimum of 4 boats heading to Monte Carlo from London on the 7th. Might be 8 if some boats join for the first one or two legs.

So its a jolly? Don't forget you are not allowed anywhere near Gibraltar without being arrested. I am guessing that the Venture Cup organisers didn't tell you that. You can't refuel there with full government, police and customs prior approval. Any breach in the regulations will result in being thrown in jail and your boats being seized and not given back! My advice is to stay closer to the African coast. Alan P

the teams running are aware of the Gibraltar issue - its pretty common knowledge.
A jolly ? well, it will be jolly good fun ! but i am sure there will be some form of competition going on between the teams

Yup. It's a 78. If you play it backwards at 45rpm you can hear Bear Grylls...

Alan - was this the record that Chris Strickland broke - same route etc ?
what was your average speed / how many fuel stops ? i could do the maths but not sure what the total distance travelled was (must be around the 2500 mark)

Biff, yes set it way back in 1998 in the Ribtec 7.4 with a 165 HP Yamaha inboard:! I think the official distance is just under 2200 NM. We fuelled in Guernsey, la Coruna, Lagos and Denia. It was a good run seeing as we didn't wait for the weather unlike others but we got hammered in the Straights of Gibraltar and lost 10 hours. It was fun setting records for others to break. Alan P

Chris Strickland broke the record in 61hrs and 11 mins stopping @ Guernsey, La Coruna, Lagos and Ibiza averaging just under 40mph over 2080nm's knocking 2hrs off the record. His story makes great reading.

Yes but it took him 13 years and masses of leaps in technolagy to do it. In 1998 GPS and weather routing was a thing that people dreamed about.
Hats off to him and his team even if he had the good Doctor with him!!!!Alan P
