Tim, the Wharf site states:-Security
Security cameras operate around the site and 24 hour recordings are taken. The marina is secured by a controlled gate and patrolling security in the evenings.
What went wrong when they have all this on offer on their web pages

The site (being former MOD) is surrounded by a fairly chunky fence. The only way in and out in through the main gate (which you have to have a fob to open) which has CCTV and is manned 24 hours a day by security.
Red faces all round in the security office I would imagine. Worrying that these bastards have such audacity to try and get into such a seemingly well protected site.

Surely all that's only as good as a response time - you can sit and watch as many CCTV tapes as you like of balaclava'd people nicking stuff - if it doesn't trigger a response to catch them in the act, that must be where it gets tricky?

private Marina near where i live had a spate of outboard and boat thefts ,,eventually transpired that some dodgy key holder was lending his key to his brotherin law who was then nicking off with the stuff during the night .

I've seen security on some of the sites I've worked on, one was on the news whilst I was working there about it been a definite target for terrorists.... I can see why to, the security guards were either drunk or asleep.
It wouldn't suprise me if some one had bunged him a back hander to turn a blind eye.

This is very worrying ..... My boat lives in a compound in the portsmouth area ......I only use a wheel clamp ..... can anyone suggest what extra measures one can take to protect ones assets..... obviously i'm insured and i have an engine bolt lock ..... Im thinking it must be worth chaining the engine skeg to the trailer ....

THere are not a lot of things you can do to deter a these guys. Wheel clamps will be off within seconds tow hitches can also be dealt with in short order. Outboard motor locks can be angle grinded off in seconds or they will just use a chainsaw on the transom.
I reckon the only option with any substance is keeping your boat out of sight which unfortunately is not a viable option for many of us.

Mines stored in a container - damn tight getting it in and out but means I can use a heavy duty padlock on the outside with just an engine lock on the boat.
Able to lock the boat to the container if I feel the need, but I don't as it's one in a yard of many.
Will only suit boats narrower than 7 ' 10" but that does me fine
