I am whiling away the holidays talking to the "owner" of this engine. I have got as far as wanting to visit to pick up and being told I can but it is in Sumatra. I can have it shipped here Free if I pay for it.
I am now awaiting a response as I have told him I have so many air miles I can come out for free and arrange shipping home myself.
Wonder if I will hear from him again?
I really can't believe folk get taken in by such blatant cons, makes me worry that this is the group that they recruit our politicians from, not the marks, the con artists!

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for that. It is very hard for us to keep on top of these scammers as a lot of the adverts look genuine on the surface and that is problem we have when accepting them so yes I use this forum and others to keep on top of it where I can. Any more suspect adverts please email me stephen@boatsandoutboards.co.uk and I will nuke them!
Happy 2008 all Rib.net users!

How about putting a spoof county at the top of the list as a lot of the scammers seem to pick Avon as it's at the top of the list! It would be easier to spot then?

Stephen - since you have recruited a team of free workers to identify the scam ads - perhaps you will have time to consider if the numerous "feature ads" are actually appropriate to the site... I don't go to B&O to find a new kitchen, a british standard, a metal detector or to win £500 in some competition. If the site can't pay for itself with the magazine, the premium rate phone line, legitiamite boating related "featured adverts", the adclicker ads (which my eyes filter out - although perhaps context sensitive google ads would be better) and the trade adverts etc then maybe you need to look at the business model? e.g. A nominal fee (even £1) to advertise would probably put off some of the scams.
If you won't get rid of the irrelevant adverts - can you atleast get the images to display properly - the "missing image X" is almost as annoying as the ad itself.

[Geography Lesson] Avon is a spoof county - it hasn't existed for about 10 years! (it got segmented in to North Somerset and Bristol) [/Geography Lesson]

hi
i find B+O a very usefull site.
often when i view your site, a sky add page loads on a new brouser. i have now set my pop up blocker to stop it, but when i use other machines i find it extremly annoying.......
as i say, it is a great site, but i have had trouble posting adds in the past.
also i dont know if its just me but i think the rib section could be split up better than it currently is, 'tenders' and 'cabin ribs' work well, but i think the other catagories could be better split up by length ie sub 4m, 4-6m and 6m+
good work with the site, its no doubt the best boat sales site going.

I have asked for info on the Mariner 90 and asked for a call back, using the local Police stations number.
I can't help smiling thinking of the poor sods reaction when they answer the phone.........
I never did get another email when I said I would use my air miles to go look at the last one in Sumatra either.........

What raised my suspicion was that the two adverts listed same boat in both Lincolnshire and Devon. I offered to go and visit the Devon one and got the following response I got from a hotmail address
"I can arrange shipping to your address. The shipping company will transport the boat at your address and you will have up to 10 days to test it in a near lake. After the testing period you can make a decision if you will buy it or not.I think this is the best way because you have this testing period.
If you agree please email me the address where you want to receive it and i will pay all the charges from my pocket. No extra money for you."
Just seemed a bit suspect to me, but you might be right - what do you reckon, dodgy or not?
