These are the wallys who will eventually supply enough ammunition to result in boating become regulated and more expensive. They have always existed but one wonders if the spate of lockdown purchases may be the tipping point.

P*sses me off, just behind a RIB last weekend leaving a harbour, soon as he passed the entrance popped the boat on the plane and sped off, through all the oncoming craft waiting to to enter, no consideration to any body else nor the 6 knot limit that extends way out beyond the harbour wall ( its all buoyed ) - Muppets

I can see a blanket 5knt speed limit for leisure coming in along the coast within 100-500m of shore

Why? In this case there were rules. He didn't follow them. So more rules wouldn't change anything.

No-one cane to serious harm. He got caught and punished and presumably won't do it again. Presumably also others have heard of his case and might think twice about being a tw@t.

So it seems no need laws are required.

Exactly.
Unfortunately politicians usually feel the need to be seen to be doing something even when application of existing legislation is all that is needed.
Usually the law abiding that end up being penalised!

At least there the speed limit starts at a reasonable distance unlike Dartmouth for example where the 6kt limit's now been pushed out c. 1NM from the the Castle. It's not as if the the approach is narrow or is full of hazards. In any kind of sea wallowing in at from so far our 6kts is rather uncomfortable, and is really pointless.

RIBase
It's a similar situation with motocycling - 30mph zones being extended, blanket 50mph limits elsewhere and a plethora of double white lines. It still doesn't stop the tw@ts that caused the rules to be brought in, only the majority of law abiding motorcyclists.

It's the same with boats except some people genuinely don't realise they are in the wrong.

It being seen to be doing something attitude…….. why are so many “registration schemes” popping up? Solving the problem itpsnt the aim……..

Motorcycles are a great example they are licnced , registered and speed limited……..on the roads just like cars……. Never an incident on the roads thus proving the solution
