Nav Lights

I've noticed on a number of occassions mentions of nav lights being a legal requirement, can anyone clarify this for me, as I am completely in the dark about this (no pun intended).

Not to sure if its a legal requirement or not but common sense dictates if your going to be out at night then you want to see and be seen by other vessels, also try putting through an insurance claim if you have a collision at night and you have not got nav lights fitted or working !!! can imagine wether its your fault or not they A) wont pay out and B) will side with the other party !!

So for the sake of a few quid and a bit of fiddling around fit some lights, even if your not thinking of going out at night you never know when your'll get caught out, of course you also need to mount them on something like an A frame and then they can become expensive.

Hi Dave

The requirements depend on you boat size.

for your 4M assuming you can do more than 7 Kts from memory, would be port & starboard plus an all round white.

As far as wiring goes, if your not planning to use them much you can get battery powered ones that bont need any wiring.

As far as needing them, I agree that you should have them as even if you not planning to go out at nioght they are still required to be used in poor visibility.

Regards Gary

Thanks Guys, You've obviously given me good advice. I'll be off to get a set of lights ASAP.
