When I've taken friends onboard I've always invited them and as such I've never expected any sort of payment as they'll be subjected to my wants of the cruise. If someone wanted me to take them out then that's a different story, I'd expect full payment of costs. But hasn't happened to me yet.
When I crew on other peoples boats it depends on the situation. If I asked someone to take me out then I'll be quite happy to pay for all the fuel and berthing fees. If I have asked for a seat upon someones RIB during a cruise (which has happened recently) then I would be quite happy to share costs if wanted to do so and always insist on paying for all Berthing fees and drinks for the trip.

I always think this is a tricky one, if you are going out anyway and you invite someone else along he/she was invited therefore I feel you can not ask for compensation, if they offer fantastic, but if they ask you to take them out then in most instances I find they will offer to split fuel.
One guy down the boat yard said he always went out alone as his mate's never offered to split any cost's but then he always offered them the boat trip in the first place they did not ask him to , he then sold the boat because he was fed up of going out by himself

Of course if a Super Model type of lass should ask for a spin, I'd tell her on "yer bike girly" unless you pay .
Not really....I'd direct her to the "Sex in a RIB" thread and see if she was still interested in going . Oh and I'd offer to pay for everything.

WHAT!! It's illegal for me to pay for lunch and drinks, berthing fees and fuel. I'll come out with you anytime Tim, if you're paying .

I wouldn't dream of asking for payment from a friend I'd invited out. Most offer but I always decline. They're friends, I'll get something back in return sometime and none of us are counting.

I think it's the bold that's the crux of the matter-it sounds like these people are pretty much assuming rather than being specifically invited.
I've always refused to take money from people I invite out in my boat too-the worst I've ever done was ask for some change for the car park and my mate wouldn't take the note I was offering.

Lot's of good advice here folks. Thanks.
To be clear, when I invite someone out, I rarely accept contributions for fuel etc. as it was my invite after all. Contributions of food or hooch are readily and happily accepted.
In the case I raised, this chap is a good friend and has been a good friend for more than 20 years. We don't dive much together in recent years as we each had our own boats and "tenders" and each of us dove in our own way. Recently, he has separated and sold his boat. I am happy to have him come out with my partner and I on occassion, but I know that "occassionally" will rapidly become a more-or-less permanent situation. I suppose that now that I have said this out loud, I am realising that that is the greater issue. I don't want him there all the time... and perhaps insisting he pay his way is my way of discouraging him!
Man, this place is better than Dr. Phil!

Well if you don't want him there all the time, Tell him! I would wait to see if he is there all the time first and if he outstays his welcome and dosen't take small hints about the situation, sit him down and explain that he's being too invasive. I meen if you ask him to pay a share towards costs and he accepts then you're not dealing with the larger issue, are you?

That's because you cannot guarantee to always be above the surface
