This looks good, it’s about time we had something like this in the Southampton area. It will make a change not to get my shoes covered in mud walking around boat untidy boat parks.

Don’t know where they got the pictures form as there is nothing like that where they are saying it is.

We did have our arguments.. . . And he could have been a little more pleasant towards me and you. But I feel its not entirely his fault, he was having to stick to the policies of a company that think they can do what they like to the people who actually enable them to stay in business. There customer relation policy need serious overhaul right across all there marinas not just Saxon and Shamrock. (Only my view) and I guess that of several other old tenants that are jumping like rats off a sinking ship.

You must like the thought of MDL getting a poke in the eye also?

I have spoken to him recently, and he seems to be a lot more reasonable now he has not got MDL printed on his shirt pocket. Something you should think about is the increase in teaching business if he is doubling the amount of small craft within 500yds of you.

I asked them for a quote via the website a few days ago and have not got a reply. There is no land line phone number on the website.

Are they a professional outfit or what?

I popped down there yesterday, not a lot there as yet but the plans look good. They say that It should be up and running March (ish)

I got a quote back from them (filled in their web form) of just under £3k a year! Good job I was never intending to go with them anyway...

Also..

I thought Bembridge Outboards offered an undercover and dry stack facility..

To be fair, the day I posted saying I hadn't heard back from them there was a pricelist in the post when I got home.

Very pricey though. It costs more to keep my boat there than it would on berth. I thought the whole point was that is was supposed to save you money.

My experience of dry stacking is that you always have to wait to get your boat in the water no matter how much warning you give and the waiting berths are always full so you have to hold off in the water until they are ready to lift you out.

Is that fair or have just had a bad experience?

KB seem to have it off pat - been on a couple of peoples boats from there, and they don't seem to have a problem.

I don't think it's ever been a "budget" option. You get the benefit of secure storage ashore, without any of the aggro of launching the boat. You also have the luxury of tying up your boat at the end of the day and leaving it for someone else to deal with

I suspect it varies from place to place. Sparkes Marina on Hayling Island were always super efficient, even when I called them at short notice to say I was on my way down to the boat. They also have plenty of pontoons for boats waiting to be lifted (and they are very slick with the crane). I moved away when the prices rose from "expensive" to "horrendous" though

I just had a nice chat with Bill - the Director over at Southampton DryStack. Having seen my post on Ribnet, he thought he'd bell me to talk about what they provide etc.

Re-reading my post, I think some clarification is needed. These Dry Stack operations are a lot more expensive than yard storage, and in some cases marina berths. Having compared a quote from KB boatpark with Southampton Dry Stack, they seem pretty much of a muchness - the more expensive figure I alluded to in my post was because Southampton Dry Stack also do covered storage - all of KB's is in the open. So, I don't think Southampton Dry Stack is expensive as stack storage goes, it is just more expensive than my storage at Eastney will cost me!

Bill has invited me to come and be shown round Southampton Dry Stack, and whilst his operation is out of my league, I'm sure it will be of interest to some Ribnet members. So, I shall go down there, ask all the right questions, and let everyone know how I get on, and what the score is down there.

It does sound to me like their will be fairly extensive facilities, and that the operation has been carefully thought out, so I guess by comparison, you will get "value" for your money, but I shall let you all know further after I've been down there.

After such a pleasant phone call, I didn't think it was fair of me to be calling him expensive until I've seen what services he provides. He was very nice about it, and at least if I come back and say "Nah, it was rubbish, they have no facilities and it's dire" I'll have seen enough to comment!
