Reminds me of an embarrassing sailing moment ...
I used to do yacht racing. We required a crew of seven so existing crew were always bringing new crew along. Obviously, it was good practice to give new crew a few words of advice and encouragement.
So, new crew comes on board for the first time and I give a few words of introduction to the boat and the plan for the day.
I then reassure him that although it is a passage race and we will be offshore the weather is good so the sea will be calm.
And that he has no need to be concerned.
And give him the benefit of all my great experience from many years of brief trips round the bay.
I then did what I should have done first:
"Do you have much experience of being at sea?"
"I rowed the Atlantic last year ..."
