Scorpion
Hi,
The cracks will be slight surface gel coat cracks around the hatch area and they are nothing to worry about, The early models suffered from this but its not a problem.
The Scorpion will be a better sea boat but depends on what you are looking for.
If it was me I would go for the Scorpion as well
Cheers
Julian

The Osprey Vipermax is a fantastic boat in average water conditions. But the Scorpion is fantastic in average waters AND in the rough. Also it's 1 meter longer and that's a great advantage in the waves. If the cracks are only in the gelcoat than there is no problem. They are stress cracks and once they are there the problem is over. I have them also in my boat, but they don't get any bigger.
Have a look at the cracks and go for the Scorpion.

for me the question is ....is it a viper or a vipermax, no planing pad and is right at the beginning of when the vipermaxs came out.
i personally dont like single jockey consoles plus i do like scorpions, for me if they were both great boats i would probably go for the scorpion due to layout and the extra m.
i would say the scorp might be a tad underpowered for me but probably cruises nicely.
the boats i would personally consider would be a scorp or a parker 9m, but i would have to go for the biggest engines i could which would mean £££££ so will probaby stick with my trusty steed for a little while longer.
best to look at both, try both and see what ya thinks, plus get a survey done on them cracks for sure..

they are in fact not! they are aft on the boat and are apparently from the old racing seats that used to be fitted!!
Ive seen both these boats and they are of equal condition roughly with the exception of the cracks and the engine hours maybe on the scorp!

Thanks to all
Many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread - its been an education - I work in the wine business and i thought that was complicted! Just had the insurance company on re stolen rib (think it will have to be a twenty year old rowing boat). The Osprey, although really great boat does not have the deck space (thanks also for the photo's) and the Scorpion - top manufacurer but not in best of condition but would think about it if not "stressed". Will hope for a New Year resolution!

Kevin, have you looked at this one? http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/LYM044/ It is in excellent condition if not a bit over priced!

I think you will find this to be a problem with all Scorpions. They tend to have free deck space forward of the helm and are quite restricted around the stern, I believe it something to do with the COG. However the front deck space is very useable if you are able to find somewhere for the bottle storage..

Hi Folks,
Hugh, as you rightly question it is indeed a Viper and not a Vipermax.
As I currently have both said Osprey in question + a Scorpion I would have to agree that the Scorpion makes a better boat when things get rough. The Scorpion hull is simply amazing. Some of the credit must go to the extra length of the boat and also mine is diesel which makes them completely different boats.
In a perfect world I would have the Osprey for blasting around and the Scorp for longer trips. (actually in a perfect world it would be a bigger scorp with twin 300 outboards... ) However one has to go!
Different boats = different price. There is no way you can get a decent Scorpion for what I would take on the Osprey...
Cheers
Ozz

Kevin, for the money I would take the bench seat of of the Osprey, it will make a superb dive boat, had many happy times diving from my Osprey.
