Osprey Vipermax 6.2 100 HP Mercury Efi
I thought some of you may be interested in my new build RIB - an Osprey Vipermax 6.2m with a 100 HP Mercury Efi 4 stroke engine...
After looking at many second hand RIBS for £12k to £15k I decided that I would be better off building a new RIB if I could find a realistically priced engine, second hand trailer and a good build quality hull - preferably built in the UK.
I brought the new 100 Efi from Mobile Marine - very good service and knowlegable. The engine has the standard 3 blade Aluminium prop - 19" pitch.
I looket at several UK built RIB's and settled on a Osprey Vipermax. Roy was very helpfull and let me configure it for my needs / wants. (The cruising area is the Bristol Channel so a good deep V was required).
I purchased the hull in the following configuration...
Twin console
2 Individual side by side seats with wing backs set as far aft as practical.
220l Built in fuel tank
Blue parallel tubes
The RIB has masses of space forward of the console.
I just finished the main part of the build and have been sea trailing the RIB today...
Planing revs = 3000 to 3100 RPM. 15Kn. 3800 RPM gives 20Kn. WOT 5600 RPM gives 38Kn.
I am very happy with this!
When the engine has run in more I may see the top RPM of 6000. (WOT initially gave 5400 RPM). A change of prop to s/s 4 blade may give me more speed / acceleration but I must admit that this engine / hull size does all that I want it to...
Fuel economy...too early to say but so far 8 hrs. on approx. 1/4 tank - I will have to do a brim to brim one day.
Overall I am very happy with the outcome.
Only slight problem has been with instrumentation - the Garmin 100i radio is a dissapointment - speaker inaudiable at modist background noise levels and the display is fogging up. I will be on the phone tomorrow.
