Out or In ??

I am looking for advice on a new rib purchase. The main decision I have to make is whether to go for outboards or diesel inboards and whether or not to go for twin outboards or twin diesel inboards and the reasons for it.

What size is the boat?
What are you planning to do with it?
How much money do you have?

We'll start with those three and then narrow it down from there. As I've been guilty of it in the past weeks have a look at the FAQ on diesel vs. Petrols!

I'm with jlanng, The trouble with in'ies is the amount of blue fluff they collect.

Pettal is of course making far more sense.

I would like a 7.5mtr rib and am basically looking to use it for cruising with friends and also a small amount of diving.

Budget is approx 25k.

in that case i would go for twin outboards some thing like 135hp/150hp which would cost around £12,500 that would leave the rest for the Rib

I was going to say £12.5k!!! That'll just about buy you an optimax and cables.

For the size you want I think twins is unlikely, by the time your setup.

I'd look for a good main engine like a 200hp Opti (no offence against evinrudes, they are bomb proof if not a little agricultural) as it will give you the performance your probably looking for.

I'd then invest in a 8hp auxilary engine for safety.

All this for £25k, your probably looking at something like an XS700 which will probably do all that you require. Although your budget maybe a little tight by the time you've sorted out console/seats/ and extras.

I've got (just about) the XS700 and can't recommend them enough although I am actually selling mine at the moment to buy the new XS950. I went for the delta formation as it gave me about 6ft of free space at the back of the RIB which is ideal for 2 or 3 divers to kit up.

Give Laurence at Barnet Marine a ring (or email....it's on the website www.xs-ribs.co.uk) and see what he can do and say Ian from Guernsey sent you.

that 12.5k was for twin evinrudes, the opti are ok but you need to be attached to a fuel tanker to get any real distance


even a single 225 E-TEC and small 8/9hp back up would only be 9.5k when bought with a rib

And you reckon the E-Tec is hugely more fuel efficient????

But if you can get the 225 E-tec and a 8/9hp for 9.5k then your within budget!

P.S. What sized envinrudes and where are you getting these from as they sound a bargain????
