Nobody said overpower it-just put the max power on for the hull rating.

If you've got close to or the max rated HP for the hull and it still feels underpowered, you've bought the wrong boat.

However, if you buy a smaller engine, it'll cost you a lot of money to find out if it's underpowered.

Didn't one or two people suggest outboards above 120hp?

Yes, but BEFORE he revealed what the max hull rating was. They must be a veritable eggshell - a 6m Redbay is rated for 175hp.

120hp is very modest for a 6m hull....

Indeed,

And normally I would of course be recommending he look at a more substantial rib however for the usuage described...

"We enjoy estuary trips, blasts out to sea for an hour or two and the odd coast hop. East coast and south west mainly. will also tow ringos very occasionally, usually with three others in the boat"

.... a Ribeye sounds quite suited. If you stuck a decent engine on the back (there is only one at this size BTW) Etec 115HO . Then I can imagine it would fill all the above requirements.

Before, after, who's to say? I just think it highlights the possibility that some of us have overpowered our boats.

Us? Doubt it, though there's always one.

Joe 'ignorant' public? Very likely.

Guys, I'm not being serious; calm down. Anyway, my boat's 6.8m and I'm carrying a lot of holiday weight at the moment.

BP is 6.4m & rated for 300hp. I've only got 230 on the back, damn! I could have gone for a pair of 150's I know that with a single 120/130 on the back, she would have been a big disappointment. There's no substitute for power, especially when you've got a hill to climb

I've got a Ribcraft 585 (max rating 150hp) with a df140 on the back. With 5 adults and a full tank of fuel it takes a lot longer to get out of the hole. I hate to think what it would be like with 6 adults and 120hp.

On the question of insurance, I wanted to replace my df140 with a df175. Insurance told me that they would be happy to insure me on condition that Ribcraft provided me with a letter confirming that the df175 would be ok. Unfortunately Ribcraft refused.

Fortunately...

You're assuming that everywhere you go you'll have 5 adults on board and a full tank of fuel. Then there's the second-hand market... what happens when you sell it on?

HP ratings are there for a reason. If you need more horses... trade up.

Ribcraft Professional 6.4 & 6.8 are both rated for max 225?

Although if you mean twins wise then that is a much less clear topic.
