Nev, yes please, for the same reason as Ian, I often find myself out alone in the boat and would like it to be connected when teaching.
I have the switch in the dash and can make up the loom so bits would be flap and solenoid if you have one, much appriecated

yup, its a bit of a dog, the decks patched up, the tubes are patched & leaking and its full of water. however it will still be good in a force 8 though!

This is the most efficient way of stopping a diesel as you have no electrics to instantly kill it..
I used to drive buses for a living & occasionally you would get a 'runaway' engine. This is where the engine gets too hot & the the diesel then ignites in the head causing a loop that causes the engine to run flat out!!!!
You may have seen a bus do this !
Into neutral, slam the brakes on, handbrake on, engine now screaming on the limiter, get out & turn the fuel off & wait for it to die. Then wait for the engine to cool down with the engine flap up (about 1/2hour). Then try again!
Makes an exciting day!
An air flap will do the job QUICKER & damage is less likely to occur.

The solenoid in question is a fuel shut off solenoid and will not harm your engine.
The engine runaway you are referring to is where engine oil vapour is blown from the crankcase into the air intake via the breather pipe. The engine will run on this vapour, bypassing the fuel system. The faster the engine runs, the more vapour it pumps, which makes the engine run faster, etc. I have never tried this, but I believe if you remove the oil filler cap it will stop the runaway. You would have to be quick though.

Yeh, I'll tell you a similar one. The oil seal on the turbo fails. The engine starts to run on engine oil. It stops when the sump oil is too low for the pump to pick it up. It takes a long time and the area around for miles is covered in blue smoke. Seriously frightening to be near the engine during this.
Being able to stop the air sounds a good idea to me.

The one problem I see with a ‘kill flap’ is that you might get oil starvation of the turbo. I seem to remember that there used to be a device to overcome this, some sort of pressure accumulator. Has anyone seen this or is it my imagination working overtime?

The boat was in Inverkip Marina and needs a bit of cosmetic work, ie new floor and a clean. AFAIK she is fine mechanically as she used to be owned by Kip Marine and they fully reconditioned her (it was training for an apprentise enginner) about 3 years ago. I've seen her out and about a few times and she certinly runs well enough.
The last I heard they owner was going to buy something smaller that he could trailer about the place.
Having seen the boat and other Pacifics about I would say that she's defenatly worth a look at if you dont mind doing a bit of tidying up, but be quick as someone was asking me about her last weekend. There is also another Pacific at Inverkip that looks as its been full refurbished, but has been on a trailer for weeks now waiting for someone to fix it.....it has leaking tubes as well

Your imagination is fine. It keeps oil feed to the turbo while it spins down after the engine has stopped.

The only ones I've experienced were part of the original equipment but I've a vague recollection that I saw them for sale as an accessory in the Demon Tweeks catalogue.
It's years since I've played with this stuff but I think the reservoir was a rubber diaphragm in a canister which was pumped up by engine oil pressure. When the engine stopped, the diaphragm supplied the pressure to the oil. There must have been a non-return valve before the reservoir to prevent oil returning back to the engine.

Hi all
I found out today that if you are looking for a spare or replacement prop for the Pacific rib's, try a BMW one as is the same direction or a Volvo single prop, these are also available in conter rotation when fitted in twin engine set up, a spacer is needed for the Volvo but i would have though the Volvo spacer would do the job.

I bought this prop on ebay last week. I havent checked the number of splines on the leg but hopefully its the right size, and im sure that as i remember the model numbers are similar aswell. If the splines are wrong, it doesnt cost that much to rehub them so at £26 it should still be a bargain. ..

Someone was asking about the gearbox man at Plymouth on this forum. Stan appears to have disappeared and vacated his premises. His mobile is off aswell. On speaking to the person who took over the unit, he said that Mermaid had bought all the spares from stan. He did have a few recon props for £200 so it might be worth phoning steve at mermaid if anyone is wanting one. As far as legs go, if anyone wants a factory recon unit, i know a dealer who has 12 of them for sale at £1500 each. This is less than a third of the new price. If anyone is interested I can pass their details on.
