Painting advice

Hello all, stupid question im painting my rib this weekend and need to mask off areas. I have bought b&q standard masking tape the thin paper stuff and I also have elec tape whats better to use?
And when should I remove the tape? When the paint is dry?

use 3m blue tape very good

When ive painted before, I removed the tape when paint was dry and it ripped half the paint off with the tape! I will try the blue stuff. Cheers guys
