parsun. cavitation
My friend has purchased a 4 meter. Chinese type quicksilver rib and a. Parun 9.8 hp 4stroke motr. With 2 on board the rib won't plane but just sits up with lots of cavitation. Is the set up wrong or is the motor not man enough for the job

Well, it IS coming up Christmas. Maybe he was after something to mix the egg nog in.
Seriously though, I'm not surprised a 9.8hp won't make a 4m rib plane with 2 people in. It's not a big enough motor.

Still needs a bigger motor though.
At least 20-25hp.

I 'just' ( only just !) got a 3.5 humber RIB to plane with a 9.9 4stroke merc on it ..It was on a flat calm river and the hull was not exactly a deep V.....
It felt like it took about 3 days to get there from opening the throttle too....

The rib came with an anchor with 25 meters of string. Do you think this is adequate as he is hoping to scuba dive

Eeeeeeh i dont kow You would have thought that as Parsons were the first pioneers of steam turbines in ships & boats over a hundred years ago and major quality marine engineers in the Tyneside area
you would have thought they would have sussed out cavitation in this day and age

Its not impossible for a 4 meter light sib to plane with a 10hp motor and 2 people...
Calm weather and motor height correct, and people moving towards the bow... (not so much as to lift the prop out..) Correct prop pitch also, with a max speed of around 13 knots... ....

By sound of it yer mate needs bout 75 meter of twine for that depth, with couple a meters of chain to keep the anchor shank down.

Those Asian ribs are generally long shaft transoms, assume he's mounted a short shaft engine. If the keel transom height exceeds 40 cm you need to chop transom down to 40 cm. Engine will push rib nicely but don't expect to be on plane with a 9.8. If that's the case get at least a 15 HP long shaft engine.
