PBL2 for a 13yr old

Hi,

Looking for somewhere for our 13yr old son to do PBL2, ideally in Poole so we can organise to stay at the RNLI college whilst down there.

He's very comfortable on the water as he spends a lot of time with me out on the water but I don't let him take the helm a great deal!

Slight query is I'd like to sit in on the course as I need some hours to re-validate my PLI certificate.

Can anyone accommodate us ideally during weekdays in March?

I don't doubt that given Paul's pedigree anyone going there can expect a good experience. However I am always sceptical of claims someone is the best instructor (boat, first aid, car, climbing, windsurfing etc) afterall how many PB2 courses can you have been on? And even people who have been to loads of different courses from different suppliers, have not been as a total beginner (or in this case a 13yr old) to all of them. And then we all learn in different ways...

I have posted before about the different style of training you can expect from a specialist school, a big outdoor centre and a sailing club. I'd suggest that training for children is a special category in itself. I'm sure Paul will understand those special challenges.

I can't vouch for Paul's instruction techniques, but I've tried his tea and it's "by the book". Bear in mind P., that he actually wrote the book as well.

Oh yeah, someone out there thought enough of him to ship him down to Antarctica to assess the boat teams in Rothera. He wasn't half surprised to discover that donegaldan had got there before him....

As an aside. The RYA state that the minimum age for taking PBL2 is 12. From a legal standpoint, if a PBL2 qualified 12 year old is in the RIB on their own and gets involved in a major incident where the courts could be involved, as a minor, are they allowed to be in charge of a powerboat on their own without adult supervision? I believe someone has to be the master on a vessel and of an adults age?

I think the PLB2 for a 12yr old states they still need Adult supervision.?

Presumably the Adult is then responsible for any incidents.?

Minimum age to take PB2 is 12. If under 16 they get an endorsed certificate.

To everyone that has made kind comments about training with us (those making kind comments about me making decent tea/coffee are clearly mistaken thoiugh!! ) - however long you have been training positive feedback is always nice to hear. We are in touch with Tony and hope that we can arrange something that works for his son.

As Willk mentions was amazing to go to Antarctica and do some boating. A truly incredible location. Meeting up with Danny (donegaldan) from Round Ireland/RIB.net was really nice – albeit slightly strange the other end of the world.

For those interested in doing amazing and different things British Antarctic Survey recruit a number of Boating Officers each year to manage the boating at two of their bases. Initial roles are 6 months but there can then be longer 18 month stints.

More about the roles appear on their website however as a general guide you will need to be a RYA PBI (or similar) with a good range of boating experience.

Nor have I ever claimed that the school is the best. There are many great instructors out there teaching great courses at great schools and a good number frequent this site. Paul, no it wasn't you who said that. Earlier in the thread someone said you were the best (or words to that effect). my observations were not targeted at you, but at general Internet claims that someone or something is the best when clearly the reviewer can't possibly have tried everything else, and likely has only used one provider!

In my opinion Paul and his merry bunch of men and women trainers are the best. Always had excellent training at Powerboat Training UK.

Tony this would be a good school to choose and has the added benefit of being at Cobbs Quay which is in the same bay as the RNLI college.
