Pembroke Dock

Hi,we have the opportunity to enjoy a couple of weeks in August at Pembroke, having not been there before would love some tips on launching (5m with 4x4) also we need somewhere to keep boat and trailer. Good places to have a run to? Are the islands accessible? (Skomer/Skokholm) Any suggestions?

You can launch at Hobbs Point or East Llanion - both good slipways with free parking for car & trailer. There's a boatyard at East Llanion, if you need to store the boat somewhere during your stay, or you could keep the boat in Neyland Yacht Haven across the river.

Skomer & Skokholm are easily accessible and you could take a run around/across St Brides Bay to St Davids & Ramsey Island.

There's 5 pontoons on the Haven where you can moor your boat FOC for a few hours and get ashore - all have pubs/cafes within easy walking distance.

There's a 'No planning, dead slow' restriction upriver of Jenkins Point - this is managed by the Water Ranger and should be observed at all times.

Enjoy!

To add to Downhilldai's (excellent) intel:-
SLIPWAYS all listed on boatlaunch
  • East Llannion - excellent low water launch (LWS possible with care), but a bit awkward at mid-tides as it has a flat bit at half-tide. Good free parking and boatyard nearby but no pontoon.
  • Hobbs Point - excellent but steep slipway but not LW+/-2hrs - has a BIG drop! Street parking and good pontoon.
  • Also - Neyland Yachtclub (public slip) across the water. All tides (LWS possible with care) but be VERY careful of large underwater obstructions on the East side of the slip (ask the locals). Pontoon & friendly club adjacent, street parking for trailer and Marina round the corner.

Destinations
Offshore Islands are great - as per Dai's intel.
Upriver is beautiful also but please obey the speed limits as Dai says.
A great trip on a HWS evening is up the Cresswell river to Cresswell Quay - navigate carefully as it's very shallow with one weaving deep channel - follow the locals, sadly I won't be one of them!

Once again I'm so grateful to you guys for the information you give. I'm going to try and get in touch with the boat yard and sort something out about storage. Really looking forward to the trip now.

Hi Henby, Hope you have an enjoyable trip, there's loads more launch sites to consider weather dependant of course, and plenty other activities though out the county if weather fails.

Update the thread nearer the time of your arrival. If I'm around, I'd gladly show you some of the upriver destinations that Jon mentioned.
