What's the difference in legal/official terms between a race where you win a trophy/bottle of booze to a small wad of cash?

I‘ve no idea what the difference is. I'm not even sure what constitutes a race and what is a bunch of friends seeing who gets home first! But if the shit hits the fan I'd bet the "tolerance" for participants/organisers of amatuer events is far higher than professional races.

Most unlikely you'll get insurance at all - at RYA races it includes third party cover.

I thought that might be the case.Could this be a bit of a non-starter given what's in the Ts and Cs about insurance in the quote below (copied directly from the entry form)?

I've got £3m TPL cover, but, direct wording taken from my policy:-

• Loss or damage occurring whilst left afloat unattended on moorings for more than 24 hours, unless moored on non-tidal

This is getting confusing...the organiser is 'hinting' that this is a fun 'race'yet some of the posters are suggesting it is a full on race...
So I think more clarity is required

If it's offering prize money for 1st past the post it's definitely a full on race...
Not sure if it's possible to comply with their Ts and Cs anyway, so while I'd be right up for it if I could,I'm afraid that's me out.

Why not ask them how to comply and which insurance companies insure for racing?

I'm hoping given what I've said on here that they'll come up with a solution.
It's their event so they should be reading this...

Thanks to everybody for their comments. We are reading and taking everything on board.
We will respond shortly with answers, in hope that you will all be able to take part (race).

When I spoke to the guys from Piranha at RIBEX they said that their insurers were happy about the event, and that it was a goer. Hopefully we'll hear some more details soon.

Sorry for delay we have been very tied up with boat shows etc.
We have an insurance company currently looking into insuring individuals who are struggling to gain the required level for the race and we will know by the end of the week.
Thanks for your patience.
