Poole

Just thought I'd let everyone know how Poole turned out!

Saturday race for the RIBS was won by Cardinal sin, the big diesel Pascoe, with Richard Strawford second with the Evinrude and us the last finishers in 3rd place. Andy Twemlow had a fuel problem (didn't put enough in!), but did over 70% so should qualify as a finisher. This was a round of the National champs and the first round of 3 for the Rib World Cup.

The conditions were more than a little nasty with very heavy rain, strong winds big swells and a lot of chop, once round Hurst it flattened out, and whilst it was windy, the laps in the Solent were relatively pain free!

Sunday dawned a lot brighter with sunshine and a strong breeze at the Royal Southern which had hosted a gala dinner for the 100th Anniversary of powerboat racing there, and after briefing we set off for leg 2 which was a start in the Solent and a run down to the Needles, around the Needles Fairway mark, and back to Bournmouth for 4 laps in the bay. Cardinal Sin (the Welby's) and Richard Strawford got away well with us in BananaShark fighting with the Backs for 3rd, we got past them and started trying to catch the Evinrude of Richard Strawford by taking the calmer inshore line and we started catching him, once out beyond the Needles all hell broke loose and waves of over 10 feet and very steep were a challenge to get over let alone race in so we took it easy and made it to the Fairway mark in the lead - it turned out Cardinal Sin had tried to open out a big lead in the rough stuff, and thier electrics had suffered as a result and wouldn't allow the engine to run! Richard Strawfords console had come loose and it meant that his steering wheel, whilst functioning, was not really attached to the boat! When we got to Bournmouth, the only boat in sight was R3 - the other BananaShark driven by Andy Twemlow in his first RIB season and chasing hard, he then had a problem with the lifter, which left us alone for the laps in relatively calm conditions.

The Sunday race was another National Championship race, the second round of the RIB World Cup (the last round will probably be the Round The Island race August Bank Holiday Sunday) and the Needles trophy race, so we got to bring home quite a few trophies for that one! Kevin (Kitten) and our new recruit James took the leisure BananaShark round the whole route as a safety boat, and despite getting a bit damp enjoyed it a lot!

I hope to have the full results soon

Here's all I got for winning the Needles Trophy - a photo of it!

It's too valuble to be allowed out of the club - we've had some more done by Keith Slater (who took this one as well), and Graham, my navigator and the infamous Kitten are in those as well as my ugly mug - I'll save those up for another time!

Below is a brief history of the Trophy for anyone that is interested ...........

THE ROYAL MOTOR YACHT CLUB ~

NEEDLES TROPHY

The Needles Trophy was first presented in 1932 and every year until 1938.

Then a break until 1951, 1952, 1954, 1956.

Another break until 1967 and then presented each year up to 1989 inclusive.

]In more recent times these are a few of the very well known names and names known in the Powerboat Racing circle.

In 1969 won by A. Pasco Watson.

In 1972 won by Tim Powell, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, William Meyers, Stirling Moss.

In 1973 won by Keith Dallas.

In 1980 won by Ted Toleman.

In 1984 and 1987 Alex Foster raced in the winning boat.

In 1988 won by Eduardo Poli.

The next year presented was 1992 - won by Richard Carr

In 1993 won by Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad

In 1994 won by Marco and Massimo Capoferi.

In 1996 won by Charles Burnett and Peter Dredge.

In 2002 won by Peter Dredge and Ian Sanderson.

In 2004 the current Motor Boat Committee of The Royal Motor Yacht Club, decided to Award the NEEDLES TROPHY to a class of Powerboats who would race to the “Needles”.

In 2004 won by Jackie Hunt and Mike Shelton.

Which brings us up to the current winners of John Cooke and Graham Lawton.

Thanks guys - chuffed doesn't even start to describe how we feel ............ did I mention we're now leading the National Champs, the BIBOA champs, RIB World Cup and around the top 3 in the Formula 200 champs as well?

We seem to have got it right this season .................. so far!

Thanks a lot mate, you could of got a better shot of something other than my rapidly disapearing hair!!

What you can't see there is that all of us were resembling drowned rats, and really needed more beer (my Guiness was round the back!)

Still got a smile on my face though, and very much looking forward to Cowes!
