problems with evinrude engine

hi i wonder if anyone can help with my engine an evinrude etec its the one which snapped the transom bracket twice . the problem now is after a year of no trouble theres a noise after i put it in gear as if the gear slips and thers a crunch sound .i looked down where the bottom lower mount connects motor to the transom bracket a thin piece of metal which looked like a shim had come out half was missing .the engine was very loose on the bottom bracket but i got back home . i looked on the parts site and cannot see a shim so tried a temp repair to see if it was this making the gears crunch and though engine is now tight and when you run it in a barrel its fine underload, but out on the water as before it still makes noise . i would take it to evinrude dealer but they are rubbish locally and tried an independant service engineers but they have let me down not answering phones etc . the next step is to go to next evinrude dealer but they are 70 miles away and i dont know if they are any good .if i cannot get it fixed i think its time to change engine .hope someone can help thanks nidge

Powerhouse Marine at Blaydon, guessing you've tried them?

I’m not clear on the shim you found and where it was attached even though I do have a 60 etec. But the gear clutch sound could be the “clutch dogs” at least that’s what I think it’s called. I’m referring to the gear shifting ring that moves forward and backwards to engage forward/reverse. It’s damaged with repeated slow shifting. The corners of the teeth round over and let it pop out of gear easily. 40 years ago I did this repair. Easy with a manual and a few tools.

P A Lynch in Morpeth? Never had any engine work done personally by them but they are always very helpful and get good reviews.

thanks pagick you may be right i dont know much about fixing engine just breaking them . Its strange that when it was repaired the last time it made the same noise just not as loud .I cannot remember if i took it back to get it fixed or it got better by itself .I went back several times . i may just bite the bullet and buy a new engine the evinrude is 5yrs old now .Stevem unfortunatley ive been to p.a.lynch when i had a suzuki and though they are nice enough it wasnt fixed . Dont know how they would fair with an evinrude

Absolutely correct. But post engine model and serial number or they will linch you.

Crunching gear shift is either your cable adjustment or the shift rod thing in gearbox. I can easily adjust mine to crunch though the gear shift cable at the engine, in that scenario f or r are a balancing act.

hi gtflash thanks for your comment .The engine doesnt crunch going into gear .when its in the barrel it seems ok even when you open it up but if you go to fast it empties it in a second with the prop.when your out on the water you can put it in gear at low revs and just move slowly .when you open it up you get a crunch noise and then it moves faster .didnt try it too much just wanted to get back in
