What does your outboard specify? Automotive EP90 doesn't have the anti corrosion additives and emulsifiers in it that marine gear oil (it's not necessarily EP90 either) does.

I wouldn't use anything other than marine gear oil. For a saving of a few quid, you could condemn your gearbox if a seal lets seawater in.

Use the right oil because it has all the correct additives and as the seals in my box leaked last year I know how important it is that you have the right oil in there.

I don't really know how long mine had water in but the gears were perfect despite having very milky oil/water.

I buy the Sierra oil from Keyparts and have a small pump that fits on the bottle, its really easy not a lot of cash to do it this way.#

Small but important point is to replace the drain plug washers with new ones at least one a season as even a small leak seems can allow water in and they only cost a few pence.
