Race with BananaShark in Cardiff
Your chance to be a navigator in a National Championship Formula 2 RIB
As you all know the Bananashark is taking part in the National Racing Finals at Cardiff from the 1st untill the 3rd of October. As usual we are looking forward to it!
There is a Basic Race on the Sunday (3rd October) and every year we like to have a collection for a local charity. This year it’s going towards our local hospital in Kingsbridge.
But we would like to put 50% towards another charity this time. And that’s the Ileostomy Association, recently highlighted here on RIBnet (Round Ireland Trip). I’ve talked it over with the people involved and everyone’s very keen!!!
We would like to invite any of you who wish to, to contribute to our Basic Race effort for charity
And there’s something in it for you !!!
I’ve discussed this with JK and you can Pledge online.
The highest bidder will be offered the chance to be my navigator in the Basic Race!!! (Subject to licence - all this can be done on the day) There will be other goodies on offer to the succesfull person as well such as BananaShark clothing!
I will open this to Non-RIBnet members and they will be able to put in a bid at banana-bid@ntlworld.com .
The bids will be constantly updated; some by you when you bid on RIBnet…some by us when we check the email.
So now’s your chance to get involved in the Powerboat Racing circuit AND do some good as well !!! Bidding will close on September 28th to allow time for the new navigator to prepare and discuss their role with me. There will be a lot of support for them. They will need to fund their costs (hotel, licence fee etc) including post-race beers! They will be covered by RYA 3rd party insurance.
In the unlikely event of Bananashark not being able to take part in the Basic, we will try to make other arrangements (Plan B ), and it is of course weather permitting!
If anyone wishes to contribute prizes also please pm me and they will be included. Hope to see some of you in Cardiff cheering on the race teams!
Good luck!

What a fantastic idea. I never supposed for a minute that our wee trip would have had such an impact.
Thank you Cookee for thinking of us after the event.
Every time I go on RIBnet my faith in human nature is restored.
People are so nice.
I'll have to tell Jimmy at the Ileostomy Association. If I can do anything to help give me a shout.
And I will try my best to be there
Wee Fi

Unfortunately will be in Greece. But then again I can take the plane and come for the weekend.
So ........... 200 quid for me as a navigator for ya (bet if I am the navigator we will end up in Alaska But hey that's the fun!!)
What is subject to licence means??
Any way good luck with the race
...and before I go just a quick question. Do you use GEKO racing helmets? If you do are they any good?

Fi it would be my pleasure to meet you - I hope you can make it and accept the cheque?
Carly -
Manos - Mmmmmm never been to Alaska, bit early for skiing I think!- You have to get a day licence and insurance from the RYA (I will publish details of the costs for this tomorrow) - We used Gecko helmets for the first time in Cowes and as far as day to day use is concerned they are very light which means less fatigue on the neck muscles during rough races and therefore concentration levels don't drop if you are less tired - I hope we never have to put them to the purpose for which they were designed though!

OK Cookee. Thanks for the info.
We also have GEKO helmets the standard staff. They are quite comfi and light as you say. We are pleased with them. Used them three times so far on the rescue RIB when we went get some people out of trouble.
Was just asking as we may be racing a boat in Greece next season and may be will go for the GEKO racing again and just wanted an unbiased opinion about them. Thanks

Cookee,
Do you know what the plans are for spectator boats ?? There is nothing on the Harbour Authority Notice to Mariners yet.
I will almost certainly be around that weekend and if appropriate can offer a couple of seats if anyone is interested.
Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike don't know what the plans are for the race boats yet! I would try the RYA nearer the time or the Harbour / port office for more information, but I would leave it untill the week before the event as things change quite quickly!
RYA - 0845 3450400
Look forward to seeing you there,

Update.
The Sunday race has now been reclassified as a National race which means that day licences are not valid. However John Puddifoot has agreed to provide a provisional National licence for the lucky person at the same price as a day licence. The cost of this is £50 + £10 for the insurance. In addition to this a medical will be required which can be carried out by your GP, I will find a way of getting the form to whoever succeeds but if you are confident then it might be prudent to book a medical with your GP!
I will provide a helmet complete with intercoms and all the training required, I hope we can fit you into a pair of Grahams overalls otherwise we may have to "borrow" a pair! We will of course provide you with a race lifejacket for the event as well.
The lucky "winner" is welcome to spend as much time with the team as he or she wishes, and we will be arriving in Cardiff at around lunchtime on the Thursday and leaving on Sunday to return to Devon.
I hope the above is clear enough for everybody to understand, if you have any questions feel free to PM or email me direct.

I have Had the pleasure
I is sssooooo good it has to be experanced to be belived... I only had a quick spin off of cowes , and not in race......its good, infact its really good,
I was always slightly puzzeled why cookee was into racing ribs, as it seem a little bit of a waste of a rib 'just' to race it.
but getting the helmet on , sitting down low into the cockpit , and wedging yourself in , with the GPS and some engine guages and controles in front of you is cool, I would guess like a small race car......
And then the engine is rumbling right behind you.... I must say the pick up is V slow , but its all about top speed after about 28 knots the prop starts griping properly and you know you are in for it then you can feel cookee controling the foot throttle , as you race towards 65+ mph and when you hit a wave ...... you just fly forever, before crashing into the next big one, and getting launched again...... I think the prop is in most of the time because the speed never drops .... ITS GREAT ... the other big thrill is other RIBS along side......... I would love to do A race
I saw 68mph on the GPS and I think we were against the tide too
I now know why cookee races ....
Thanks again Cookee
