Clarkson wouldn't even make a lowly club racer, when he's looning around on the track they only show the good bits, you need to see the out takes!
And as for trusting him with the Bugatti, who else could they give it too and get all that free publicity!

They don't need all that free publicity - the car will generate it's own!!!
Obviously Clarkson is no racer but for a car buff made good he doesn't do too badly!!!
It was interesting to see just how well Nigel Mansel did - 3 seconds faster than anyone else in a crap car. Maybe they should replace the suzuki with something like a TVR - I reckon that would really show up some big differences!!!

Sorry cobblers, he isn’t even a car buff, he is a journalist who chose to write about cars, a subject he knows nothing about Des

As regards the issue of radar reflectors - I fitted one on my yacht and was advised to mount it as high up the mast as it would go. Presumably this assists in getting it seen by a half asleep deck hand on night watch aboard a flag of convenience freighter doing 25 knots just outside the separation zone mid channel. I presume sticking one six feet out of the water on an A frame is a bit like wearing a St Christopher medal, but probably not so useful.
On the second issue, Jeremy Clarkson is a c*nt.

How can he not be a car buff - he lives and breathes them - and did long before he was famous!!!
As to knowing nothing about them he has probably driven more expensive cars than all of us on here put together - the fact that
a: He is still alive
b: He still has a clean driving licence
Must mean something!!!

Unless one is inclined to strap a 25ft pole to one's A frame inorder to mount the Radar deflector, I reckon that one on the A frame is a hell of a sight better that not having one at all!!. Even in big sea the Radar will still detect the deflector, all be it not as strongly. Some channel marker bouys are not that high, but they glow nicely on the screen. I think that as a yacht has a nice sticky up bit, you might aswell use it thats all.

You’re right at 6’ you can’t expect much but even at 25’ reaching in a bit of wind the performance of a RR will fall away dramatically. I don’t understand why they aren’t gimballed. Des

I think the Top Gear format has gone well past it's sell by date with that crew. Hammond is quite funny though.

What happened to Jason Dawe, the fat bloke from Truro? He didn't last long. Maybe he got fed up with being refered to as "The fat bloke" by a taller, balding, fat bloke.

What are Cyclops Technologies playing at? They make probably the best radar reflectors in the World but try finding out anything about them or people who sell them!!!
I think Alan Priddy used one on his RIB.
http://www.cyclopstech.co.uk/
Spoke to them ages ago and they said "out soon" - web site is crap!!!
More info from some Yanks sites.
http://www.openseas.com/cyclops/cyclops.htm
Cyclops are probably too busy doing sneaky work for the MOD!!!

Im curious....
Active radar reflectors - I have a question.
Normal radar works by transmitting out an EM signal and timing how long it takes to get back thus being able to calculate the distance the object is away because the radar signal travels at a known speed (the speed of light). - stop me if im wrong already...
How then does an active radar system work - if the radar is dependent on knowing the exact time the signal left the boat and timing how long it takes to be bounced back - how then does it calculate the distance for a signal that originates from an unknown location at an unknown time.

I think the active type take the already transmitted signal and amplify it. They don't actually send a new signal out!!!

I'm not sure how the "Active" type work either. Codders must be right, it can only gather and return the sent radar signal in a more effective manner. I've just done a bit of "Googling" on the subject and found plenty of people selling them, but none that explain how they work. They appear to be of greater benefit on yachts to counter the heeling angles.
