Bruce - it sounds to me like you went to Ribex hoping to be sold a rib rather than to buy a rib. That must make you the only person in the world who likes to believe that their buying decisions rest with the salesman...

Ha, that was what I was going to say!

I will add though, if I were to walk into any shop, showroom or show and was pounced on by a sales person other than to be curtious and let me know where they were if I needed them, I would walk away. Why offer trips to everyone!

I didn't want any demos this year (well I did actually, didn't have time) as I was busy doing other things against a tight time scale. I was however offered and went on one offered buy Liverpool RIBs, to test a 175 Etec. I didn't ask!

If you're in the market for a new RIB then you must have an Idea of what you want and budget. I know that you have a fair Idea of the manufacturers around, so why didn't you concentrate of climbing all over the RIBs of interest to you? If you liked what you saw then you ask for a sea trial!

I was interested in a door latch on the Hunton Powerboats RIB. I asked where they bought it from and got my answer. These where really friendly people hoping to sell a £40,000 RIB and some twat asks them for info on a latch

I'm sorry if I am having a go Bruce, but in my view to missed lots of oppotunities just because you didn't ask.

I hope you take Andre's generous offer and have better luck at SeaWork.

PS: Andre, if you happon upon some spare tickets

As usual, I have enjoyed the comments which I suspected I would get. However, to continue to inflame I would humbly suggest that, if we all want the industry to expand - we do, don't we, or do we want to keep it an elite lifestyle business club? - I think we need to cater for the guy who walks in and wants to buy a boat as a newbie. And I would argue that what we have a tendency to do, and this applies to the whole industry, is to talk to our firends, those who are already marine aware, rib aware, and we present an unfriendly set of 'backs' to the ignorant newbie.

I have heard this consistently with regard to Ribex over the last four years. I remember how intimidating I found my first one when I knew nobody. This criticism applies to some other more specialist marine eventws as well. It is very different at eg SBS or LBS when a newbie is welcomed.

As to my good friend RIVA:

"you stood there and sold boats last year ?
what did you do diffrent & how many did you sell ? useing a diffrent tack ?

i just wonderd , if i could pick up any tips that would help , what actualy would you do diffrent if you had £8 to spend on every potential customer you saw ?"

We actually went out of our way to offer rides to people and give them a carrier bag with something relevant in it. Yes, the boats did sell eventually, but we were beginniers without the accumulated years of skill, wisdom and expereince you possess. The only problem was that people did come back to us, after the ride, but ofeten six or nine months later.

There is no rocket science - just anything to present a slightly more friendly face to someone you have never seen before....

qcamel - thanks for your comments:

"RIBEX is a small specialised show for a small specialised market, and yes I am sure it could be better but that does not make it bad. It sounds to me that your blaming others rather than addressing things yourself....."

I think that sums up the problem. If we think of ourselves as a small specialised market, that is where we will remain. I am not blaming anyone, trying to open people's eyes. BTW, have you put £40,000 at risk recently to set up a company and build two boats and take them to Ribex? I did. It weren't the success I hoped, but it washed its face and taught me loads about the industry. I was, and continue to in other ways with other partners, address things myself.

Andre - gracious as ever. Please, I did not mean to imply you ignored me. I knew you were busy, and did my best not to disturb you. But there were others in Parker's employ on the stand at the time. At least, I assume some of them were salesmen? Or do I have the model wrong here?

Please email or PM details of the 9m Cabin. I am definitely interested. Especially endurance figures.

Polwart - were I am newbie I would need help in making the buying decision. That surely is what the good saleman is for. But if I am initimdated by loads of people who look like experts standing together in groups, not knowing who is a punter, who is a salesman, who is JK - it can be hard to know what to do. Perhpas I am after all a shy retiring flower.

Hightower - naw! If you think that is having a go, have a look at some hardcore trade forums! "I know that you have a fair Idea of the manufacturers around, so why didn't you concentrate of climbing all over the RIBs of interest to you? If you liked what you saw then you ask for a sea trial!"

Actually I was being a bit of stealth buyer, but the extend of being ignored alarmed me!

Hope to get to Seawork - would love, Andre, a VIP invite.

Thanks

Bruce

Bruce, you didn't have the monopoly on being ignored.

I spent 20 mins trying to speak to Lee fairweather (and yes he knew I was waiting) about a possible deal on a new outboard. After the customer that he was with and I waited for dissapeared he told me he'd be 2 mins, walked off and started speaking to someone else. He then came back, grabbed a handfull of brochures and again told me he'd be 2 mins and walked off again. That was enough for me and off I walked! I also asked for some info last week when I phoned his workshop and I'm still waiting for the answer, one I got for Ron Hale Marine just by waiting 30 seconds on the telephone.

I promise that I won't be using Fairweathers again, unless I have to! I certainly won't recommend him again.

Bruce - given that people knew your previous involvement with PrimeRib is it possible that those in the industry also saw you as a competitor... ...and would certainly recognise that you weren't a newbie.

If I were a newbie at such an event looking for advice - I certainly wouldn't expect to get impartial advice from a salesman. I would possibly look to the BIBOA stand or anyone else who was not associated to a particular brand. I suspect (having never met them but exchanged a few PM's with RichardB) that if I went there and said "this RIB idea looks like fun, I have no idea where to start - or who to speak to - or who might be able to talk to me about one of these with a cabin on it" that they would have given some genuinely independent advice - and quite possibly taken me to a relevant stand and introduced me... ...the same might well apply if I had gone to one of the training schools stands - which I assume were represented.

Had I asked Andre for independent advice on a cabin rib - I suspect it might just have been (understandably) slightly biased towards the Parker range. Likewise for anyone else.

And finally - this is a specialist market, but I don't think it is elitist. But I have no objection to it remaining specialist - perhalps your mistaken in thinking that because you want to "rib" everyone must but just are too shy to say so - and perhaps that is why your prime rib concept wasnt the all out success you expected.

Ribex

I agree to an extent about the lack of interest shown by some of the sales people on the pontoons , Andre was the opposite and was very good to talk to and did invite me to a trip. I think some of us are a little reluctant to ask (British reserve ) and would liked to be asked . Certain Makes certainly turn thiere noses up at you if you dared to look at the boats, Scorpion being one.
We may have looked like drowned rats in old clothes but will be serious buyers at some time and at present I will look no further than Poland !

I cant agree with you as i watched graham and joy spend time with people and arrange rides with mike deacon in Hot Lemon.
What i don't like is sales people standing talking to there mates or texting when you have asked for help.
I have a Yamaha and i would buy another but what if i where a Etec person looking to change, the body language
of the sales man would put me off.
I am in retail with four salesman so i do have a little bit knowledge in this feild over 30 years. In most cases its the salesman that makes or breaks a deal. Theres a lot of RIBS out there and if your happy selling a few then great but if you want to be a Scorpion or Redbay, Mark Pascoe etc.
Then you have got to go the extra yard. Ballistic are trying hard to give a service such as the help line etc.what a pity some of the others dont follow suite.

I'm assuming that I need to apologise as well to Bruce - don't remember seeing you waiting to buy a boat, but I do try and talk to everyone!
