RB12 - the 4th Round Britain Powerboat Race

John Puddifoot, Neil McGrigor, Stuart McKean (SCM on RIBnet) and Hugo Ambrose were at the London Boat Show today to officially launch RB12 which will take place in July 2012.

It looks like being a very professional operation, and with three and a half year's notice it should give people time to get their boats sorted out!

There will be more information on their web site www.rb12.com but here's some of their blurb to be going on with:

The 2012 race is being organised by Neil McGrigor. He has a long established passion for powerboating and currently holds the record for the fastest non-stop circumnavigation of Britain in a time of 27 hrs 10 mins. Neil also has first hand experience of the Round Britain Race having competed in the 2008, finishing 5th in his class and 7th overall.

McGrigor has appointed Lynx Sports Management to help run the event and ensure the various environmental, safety and maritime issues are correctly covered. The 2012 race, supported by the Royal Yachting Association, will be limited to approximately 50 boats. The route, classes and also race categories will be finalised over the coming months, however it is confirmed to start and finish in London just prior to the start of the 2012 Olympic Games.

"My intention is to make Round Britain 2012 the most memorable powerboat race ever” says McGrigor “with the world's spotlight focussed on Britain for the London Games, we have the opportunity to make this race a showpiece event on and off-the-water for the whole boating community. We are currently sourcing venues that will satisfy not only the race elements, but also the on-shore events that we want to host as part of the wider picture. These include activity and training opportunities for those wanting to learn more about aspects of powerboating and watersports in general"

Is it going round the whole country this time or missing out Scotland again?

Going round the top this time!

Unlike its predecessors run in 1969, 1984 and 2008, in which competitors navigated the Caledonian Canal, the 2012 race will entail a complete circumnavigation of Britain making it, without doubt, the toughest endurance powerboat race in the world.

They may even do the Bristol Channel too

It's planned to start and finish in London which will be very cool, and go clockwise with some easyish legs along the south coast and then get tougher as the event goes on.

John
