RB5.5, which boat ?
Hello,
i've read via this site interesting stuff about the round Britain trip in sub 5m ribs. The boats that stood up to that kind of treatment have to be very good boats. From what I under stand there was a Searider 5.4, 3 x RibCraft 4.8 and a Humber but I don't know what model. Does anyone know what the other boats were ?
If you were to do a round Britain trip in a sub 5.5 m rib which one would you choose ?
Thanks for your ideas, it'll help me choose my ideal boat

If I remember correctly all the boats stood up well. Their was even a home made boat. It was the engines that suffered and one in particular.

I have been window shopping (I know who doesn’t) for the next RIB and I would go for a 5.5 Humber Destroyer or Ocean Pro as soon as I can work out what the difference is between the two . Some nice deals kicking about direct from them http://www.ribworld.co.uk/backend/ribsforsale.php?x=0
Yes as some say they are a bit “work boat” but it is all down to what you are looking for and what you are expecting to use it for.

MDT,
When I was looking at Humbers I found that the major difference seemed to be in the V of Hull. A basic guide for me was the more it cost the better the Deep V. Humber make some shallow V Hulls so it pays to be careful when you look at their boats. That is unless you want a shallow V Hull for quick planing.
Hope that helps.

A UK built Tornado would be my choice.

Again 5.25 osprey viper, outstanding sea going ribs for there size, genuine deep vee hull and has a beam of 2.5 metres, one of the best boats in a rough head sea and unbeatable in there class in following sea's, which can sometimes be a problem with the narrower deep vee hulls.

If you want a long term investment, that will last, and have good resale value with top build quality, go for a Ribcraft.......maybe 5.45/ 5.85.
We looked at a couple of Humber boats, but on the ones we saw, it looked like they were finished at 4 O'clock on a Friday bank holiday. I'm not saying this is representative, but put us off.
The other ones I'd consider would be Tornado/ Viking, XS
Cheers

Ditto interesting but still as clear as mud to me . Buying a rib is a nightmare . You can't just go testdrive them all , like cars , and even if you do get a testdrive there is no guarantee you get the right conditions to form an opinion and make a direct comparison with another.
I would rather lose 50% on a 15k boat than 30% on a 30k boat if it did a similar job .

Nobody mentioned a SeaRider. Is that because the've been outpassed by Osprey, etc ... ?

Yes ribcraft are a better finished boat than the humber, but look at the cost difference. Put a tohatsu tldi outboard on the back of a humber and you have got a very good value for money package.

It all depends on your outlook Pablo.
I like the solidness and utilitarian style of the SR while others like to have extra seats and a boat which is also for show.
Personally I just want it to be as reliable as hell and solid as a tank. Sea Riders are never going to be the prettiest but they suit me just fine.

They'd suit me just fine too. I want a boat for spearfishing, I don't want to cry if I get fish guts on the leather upholstery ! I was just wondering if hull technologies have evolved enough so that other hulls are even more sea worthy than a SeaRider ?
