Rear bench seat - soaking up water = heavy

I have a rear bench seat on a 6.5m rib, suitable for 3 kids or 2 adults.

It is fairly standard, box, lid on hinges with good storage underneath and back rest mounted on stainless steel.

THE PROBLEM I have is that the cushion is foam then lined with typical black material but the cushion soaks up water this the seat base and therefore “lid” for the storage becomes very heavy.

I hope my description is clear.

So 1) is this the normal sign that the seat upholstery and foam in need of replacement? or

2) is this a common problem

Or 3) is there an alternative material, a modern foam / cushion material that can be attached but doesn’t soak up and hold water???? Wooden lats with space between each and a smaller bit of cushion on each lat?

Ideas welcome.

Thanks

Somethings not right for water to be getting in. But for a short term fix can you not store the rib with the seat top open, i.e. in the vertical? This way the water can drain out, may be worth drilling a little hole at the lowest part.

Just a thought.

Reticulated foam needs to be used, normal foam holds water like a sponge. But as Ribtecer says, leave the seat up to drain away.
