As per the title, I would be really grateful to receive any recommendations or feedback from forum members regarding these guys..... West End Marine, Wide Beam Barge, Marinised diesel engines, Generators, Stern Drives
They've been very helpful on the phone, but would appreciate feedback from members here....PM's would be appreciated and will be in confidence....Thank you

Discomick.....very kind offer, thank you but happy they are legit now......they seem to have lots of diesel stuff on the go if the amount of ads in circulation is anything to go by.
Cheers all, RIBnet comes up trumps again!

Thinking of buying some engine from West End. My first impressions of Sam was that he was a bit 'cock sure' of himself but been in the business 30 years he probably could do the business when it came to marinising engines.
This weekend I went down to look at a boat on the river Itchen it's got 2no. BMC 5.1 6 cylinder diesels in (this was my alternative plan). Anyway, came away undecided as the oil pressure gauge on the starboard engine went up to 80 and stayed there. As I was coming away I got talking to the owner of the marina who almost immediately put me on to someone else that deals with engines. I told this chap of my options, either 2nd hand, new or Chinese new. I mentioned West End Marine and as soon as I did, he stopped me and told me not to deal with him. I could see there was some bad business blood between them, so I asked him to detach his personal feelings from the conversation and he still told me not to go there.
Anyone got any info to the contrary?

Signed up just to make this post, but with good reason.
I ended up having to take West End and "Sam" to court - they supplied two "new, identical engines", which actually turned out to be re-manufactured tractor engines (from Italy no less) with rounded nuts and ground of serial numbers.
I've contacted Apollo Duck (who don't seem interested in doing anything about it) and Trading Standards (same) so ended up going down the court route.
I've included a page on it on my blog, hopefully to stop someone else wasting thousands of ££ with West End - Chasing horizons....: The Engine Saga....
PM me if you want any more info.

Hey Ausnp84
sorry to hear about your saga mate,
I thought he was a bull5hitter on the phone and that's why I did some checking around- I just didn't like his arrogant mannerism and something wasn't quite right with what he was saying.
I had a few replies on here from people- after I posted- telling me not to touch him with the proverbial 'ten foot barge poll'- biggest crook in the marine industry was one of the quotes.
Since I have spoken to people from both ends of the country and by chance I mentioned Sam and they all said the same- Don't go there.
Best thing you have done is to share your pain and let the rest of us spread the word.
By the way, what are the engines you got from Mermaid?
All the best

Hi,
I went for a pair of Mermaid's ME-446s; they're slightly more "industrial" than say a Volvo, but they run well and Mermaid are excellent to deal with.
Highly recommended (Mermaid that is, definitely not West End).

Westend marine
Hi all,
Just joined to add my 2 bob to this post, though I must admit I've been abit of a silent info gatherer for the last few years on here!
I've read lock stocks blog too, shocking!
Well here goes, purchased a yan 6lp 315 from the dealer in question, actually got to the point of dropping the engine in (literally on the forklift at eye level at this point). My friend who is a seasoned mechanic notices something... A large dollop of liquid metal on the crankcase!! Total gutter!
So called mr Sam this morning and he assures me it will be ok, bear in mind this engine was sold as a good quality take out. Anyway, I told him no chance, though he asked if some one had "poisoned my brain" where have we heard this before?
Anyway, it's to go back and have the block replaced (he called later today saying he has sourced me another block)
The dilemma now stands, do I trust this guy to do such extensive works to the engine? I have big plans and goals with the new boat and I refuse to accept anything less than what I've payed for.
Any comments and opinions are welcome
Thanks

Yep I'd bet on there too seen one rotted through, the raw water pumps spray a little water out of the shaft seals just enough to rot the block away
I spray behind my pumps with spray grease when I remove the pumps to fit impellers
