Red jet hit a jet ski
Just heading to the island on the red jet when a wake jumping skier ran into the ferry. His ski sank, but amazingly he looks uninjured. A few small boats and another skier rescued him and tried to tow the wreck away. Definitely a reminder of how dangerous wake jumping can be!

If he had t-boned a smaller boat, it could have been significantly less comical.

I hope he is ok, but I also hope his jet ski is completely ruined and sinks to the bottom and also that he is prosecuted, they are a pain in the back side to all boaters around Poole especially in the main swash channel near the entrance, can you tell I dont particular like em ? Ive had far too many near misses with them, even had a few fall off in front of me after jumping other boats wakes.

I'm no fan of them either after my run-in with one at Baiter a few years ago.
It's getting time that registration of the ski included a basic common sense test.

I hate to say it but more people have died on other types of watercraft ( inc a style a lot closer to home ) , I'm not aware of any fatalities on PWC's??? So who needs the training and legislation - everyone?

Problem is, if you look at the incident pyramid, the jetskiers are already 2 steps up, and seriously overconfident of their own abilities.
You could say the same about quite a few rib owners, but the proximity issues aren't there as much due to the nature of the craft (as in, you'll tear the prop off if you behave like a dick in 2 feet of water).
Ribs don't tend to lend themselves to stupid behaviour like donuts in amongst swimmers or dicking around right by a slipway so your mates can watch.

I guess ribs inherently run different risks, props can and do serious damage to people, been too many deaths already, hence the ongoing kill-cord debate.
Last really scary thing I saw was two water craft leaving a beach on the west wight on the plane, a stones throw for the shore, rooster tails going and weaving between the anchored boats ( and yes there were swimmers in the water inc kids ) - the craft were two phantom 21's showing off.
I'd suggest there's room for improvement in all quarters

I fully agree. I wouldn't be against the notion of some compulsory proficiency test for water users either. I'd include Sail and Paddle in there with Power. Nothing too onerous - just a basic understanding of any pertinent Nav. Rules, Rescue procedures and Safety Equipment use. Untrained salts would walk it and uninformed newbies might get their eyes opened.

You can test/train users all you want, you can never account for stupidity though.

An age old debate, and a rational response. But, what it means is you and I will be paying (one way or another) for the staffing of the scheme, the application process, the periodic renewal, the enforcement officers to police it, the cost of prosecuting those who don't comply...
And yet, whilst it will be marginally harder to get on the water in the first place it will probably do nothing for the mentality that puts people at risk - its not like quite significant driving licence regimes prevent everyone from being wreckless on the road.
At the end of the day nothing to stop enforcement action under current legislation, regardless of the type of vessel.

A persuasive argument that I will remember in case I should ever be caught driving without a valid example of same.

I should caution anyone planning to take this subject seriously, that I have been given the day off and have no plans to make any sense whatsoever.
