Refurbing a rubber cleat handle

I've made good progress with 4 of these rubber cleats, but the front two are proving to be very stubborn! (the other four responded well and look great now).

This is after 4 or 5 applications of Shmuffex:

Is there anything else I can try, or do I need to accept this is as good as I'll get?

Post up pictures of the others.

I think, and this is a personal opinion, is about that's as good as it's going to get. Structural integrity is more important than looks, so if still doing the job, leave well alone. Only other option is to remove and glue new cleats on.

The boats having it's engine serviced, so I'll post a pic of one I prepared earlier at the weekend.

Here's a cleat before cleanup (pretty grim looking):

I find a rub with thinners works well it removes the sticky film you seem to get on rubber fittings and gets rid of the ingrained dirt

In need of a lot of elbow grease and expensive cleaning products. Apart from these two cleats, it looks lovely.

Will have to remove the antifoul at some point, owatrol works after soaking for 12 hours, so will be very time consuming to remove it all from the hull

The rubbing streaked responded well to MEK, so I’ll try that - thanks!
