Resale value

Hi
Just wondered what resale values are. Just rough.
Looking at zodiac cadet Alu delux around 3.5 size with tohatsu or similar 15hp and indispension trailer.

Haven’t bought yet and looking at new.

Why am I asking? If I look at a car and aim to keep it 5 years I then look at resale and work out true cost.
Usually buying better quality holds its value better and thus worth the higher initial outlay.

I wondered if this is true of boat and engine.

Removing condition, is this a resaleable combo?
No plan to sell but never know what’s around the corner.

Just general thoughts, not how longs a piece of string. Can get that from the mrs.

Thanks

To be fair I’ve never lost out selling boats I basically look at the depreciation per year split it between holidays etc and the cost is reasonable for the fun I’ve had. But you only get what people are prepared to pay not what it’s worth to you having said that it’s a sellers market at the mow so you could get a good price, look on eBay to compare good look.

On small boats you're unlikely to lose much at all buying secondhand, unless the engine packs up or similar and then you could be looking at a £2000 bill for a new one.

Buying new you will have warranty but potentially increased servicing / depreciation if you sold short term.

Engine and trailer service could easily be £500/year if you take it to a dealer which would far outweigh any depreciation.

Lifejackets, VHF, PLB, GPS, anchor etc could also be more than the cost of the boat

Basically I think my point is don't worry much about the depreciation since all the other costs will dwarf it. Just work out what you need to buy short term and check you are happy with the overall cost.

I imagine I could service both to be honest.
How often are outboards serviced and what's done - roughly..
same for the trailer. do they have an mot type thing?

Servicing an outboard is easy if you are mechanically minded. You should be able to look up the cost of a service kit on eBay.

Trailer again at this size will be unbraked and the main thing will be a set of bearings each year.

It's main dealer prices that will send the costs rocketing

If you buy those three items new you will lose money on all the moment you take them home. Much less at the moment than say 2yrs ago but still a loss. However that is the cost of peace of mind from having unused, undamaged brand new... plus not having to trawl the small adds and travel to see if the photos lie or not. New is a choice I've made 8 times out of 20 for the sibs/OBs I've had over the last 10+ years and as it's suited at the time I've never regretted the losses.

Sibbing (and I include sub 4m light ribs in this) is a bargain leisure activity besides many you could indulge in and the rewards of being out on the water are massive so never regret the costs which are peanuts in the scheme of life.

If they are standard size bearings then draw or press them out I guess.
Thanks

How is the service calculated on the outboard? Time or running hours?

One thing I’ve come to accept in the 30 odd years of boat ownership, is never ever try & justify the cost. There is absolutely no economic case for owning a pleasure boat. Pay your money & enjoy the boat & your time on the water.
