To be perfectly honest, that is the best way.

I've got a good relationship with Nat West I'll ask them what they can do, it will be easier to transfer the monies, as for giving it back, I think a RIBnet meet/ diner would be the way to give the money back in person or just spend it having a big RIBnet party

Partly correct. Maximising the final cheque to the Charity is the target I'm sure. If the project finally grinds to a halt "for want of a nail" then a cash purchase is necessary. However, the nail seller is taking a "profit" in some form and we know that if we build a RIB ENTIRELY from open market components, it will cost more to build than it is worth.

As I risk sounding like Poly, I'll explain it in my own terms:

If you donate £1000 for an engine, add it to a finished RIB that would fetch £1500 without the engine and finally sell the combo for £2400 then the donated £1000 just became £900. I'm not saying that WOULD happen, just that the math needs to be done beforehand.

Maybe we should sell the rib as fully refurbished but without an engine. That would maximise the profit, which after all is the aim.

That would seem like a good idea. If in the meantime someone manages to wangle a free motor then that would be an extra bonus.

If your going down that route you might as well have people donate directly rather than giving items, the donation I made on the Garmin 451s won't increase the value of the rib by what it cost, neither will you see a return on that if you sold it separate - I might as well have donated the cash instead.

Guys, we are building a complete rib and hopefully it will be the most famous secondhand rib in the UK when completed

The complete package will be auctioned off and will hopefully reach a very good price

I think thats the best idea. Happily donate £40 to this, spend more on a night in the pub and its a very good cause. Surely there must be 50 folk on here happy to donate £40?

Work starts on the 26th and 27th October at Biffer’s place in Southampton

Biffer has kindly offered us his Custom Ribs workshop, please bring your own health and safety equipment like gloves, dust masks and goggles etc.

Here's Biffer's website: http://www.customrib.com/

I’ll bring the rib down on the Saturday for 10am so if you are coming PM me and I’ll send you the address.

We will be removing the console and working on cleaning and repairing the gelcoat.

Right, been up to natwest and they've given me a instant saver account and we can pay into that, the account number is 46703357, the sort code is 524132.

I've explained what we are going to do with the account and they are happy with this, I would suggest that when you donate you put Macmillan and your RIBnet name so it will show on the statement.
I've elected to have the statements online so I can make our transactions as transparent as possible

In my experience...... quality auctioned items for charity seem to attract a premium, i would expect the finished rib to easily achieve or exceed its market value due to the fact that its for a good cause.

The key to success will be targeting the audience of potential auction winners (purchaser) in the best setting......... or how about a raffle at somewhere like the boat show next year?

How about a fixed odds raffle. Only say 1,000 tickets at £5. That way you know your odds of winning and also Macmillan is certain of a fixed price.

An auction could end with too low a bid and an open raffle draw too little.

You can forget a Rib.net Raffle

I tried this last year, with the view to giving away one Garmin 750s per month but I was told quite clearly it was not permitted on here due to gambling rules etc.

Auction is the only way, there's no way it'll get the interest to be done at the SBS so my guess is eBay

I once saw a vw camper raffled and they couldn't sell enough tickets. A decent military 5.4 yam 90 and good trailer could be worth as much as £10,000

You need 2 people really wanting it to get a good price at auction.

Or

There is always sealed bids

I suppose this is where we need the assistance of the media machine to capture the imagination of the boating public.

I for one don't want to poo poo the idea of loaning £40 to the cause as i would be prepared to throw my hard earned spondoolies in to the mix, but i would be gutted at the end if my contribution ended up being worth less than donating it and giving the tax relief..... and the thought of someone getting a bargain off the back of hard work, genorosity and charity sticks in the throat a bit
