Rib for Training

Hi all I am new to this Forum and indeed to the world of ribs. I was recently looking at a 6.2m rib It was a Northcraft blue tube rib with 175hp Mariner outboard. The test revealed a problem in that the port tube parted company with the transom after a couple of full lock turns. Upon returning to port further inspection revealed that someone had tried to stick it back on previously.
Is this a usual thing to happen to ribs? It was only a 2000 model.

Err, hope not, having a 1997 model myself!

Welcome, Sun_Coast. I'm a YBW lurker, so recognise your name from there.

My own RIB has a very substantial double-layer of hypalon under the tube attaching to the GRP hull. Some RIBs have different attachment methods, but the one you tested sounds like it had the "bodge" system. Well done for noticing it.

My own purchase was based on narrowing my choices down to builders with a great reputation (Delta, Avon, Ribcraft, Ribtec, Redbay, Scorpion, Crompton, Osprey and a few others).

That rear section is going to suffer constant battering from the sea, even when up on the plane.

Hi Richard. We had the rib lifted out and the guy ckecking it said that in his opinion the GRP transom should have been moulded with a 90 degree return to aid the bonding of the tube to the transom, i.e. something to attached to, not just the end of the transom?

Oh and it had a split seam in the stb short rear section.
Its a shame cos that rib have a berth in our Marina which is essential as we need a rib for power boat 1 & 2 training.
The training will be away from Gib as you are not allowed ribs over 6m in Gib waters.
I am now gonna put another thread up asking if anyone knows of any second hand sizable ribs for sale on the Costa Del Sol. wish me luck CGN

I have a friend that used to have a Northcraft 6.2m. His tubes also came away from the hull on the aft sections. The floor and transom also cracked!

Clive, Jason Norman from Pro Sport RIBs logs on here. He builds RIBs (in Guernsey) to your reqirements which I hink would be best that you and Phil have a chat with him to see what he can come up with.

Dom

Jason can you give Clive a PM to get the ball rolling.
