this month in RIB Int there's an article from the guy who runs the ribs through "The Bitches " and he makes the point that at a certain sea state and in certain conditions you have to be sure that you don't accidently trigger the kill cord and leave the boat foundering.

It came to mind on Saturday when I did exactly that inshore with some big rollers but luckily with no adverse consequences.

Although not kill cord related we did have the unfortunate situation where a 6 metre RIB capsized in the surf - no injuries but a lot of damage

I capsised a little Rib in the surf off 'the run', the entrance to Christchurch Harbour when rescuing a sailing dinghy. I leant forward in front of the console to pull somone out the water and out came the kill cord. I saw a big wave coming and I could'nt power into it. Personally I think even if I had gone into it nose first as opposed to side on it would have flipped. Anyway nobody was injured and the engine wasnt running when submersed so it didnt wreck it.

So similar to an incident last year where all three crew were thrown from their RIB in front of us(no kill cord)...Paul jumped on that runaway as it headed for the rocks...then R.B. went back for the men in the water. It was a job hauling them in.

Yep! you sure needed nerves of steel on CJL's Humber the 5.5 with the 150 optimax. It was always an interesting ride.

It did get very airborne a few times but the important thing is to hang on and move with the boat, but falling out is always a possibility that you have to be prepared for when engaging in such activities.

It is incidents like the boat seperation outlined here that makes us all think of the safety kit that we use, lifejackets, killcords, and even helmet and neck-braces? If you are doing 50 knots plus you are more than likely to sustain an injury of some sort if you hit the water.

If you do fall out, you have to be prepared for it and be ready to deal with it when it happens, this means being prepared. Are MOB drills something that we should not all be practicing on a more frequent basis?

As CJL mentioned, the toe-straps are quite an important issue in keeping both person and boat together. We are looking at fitting some to the current boat, what are peoples opinions on toestraps, fixing them to the deck, and ankle injuries etc?

No look its one of those new fangled "no wires" proximity kill cords! They are all the rage in Wales! Have you guys not heard of them???

Describes how Max Richardson, senior investment banker at Rensbug, hit a freak wave on Sunday which chucked him and his friend out of the boat.Took them 45 minutes to swim ashore. Meanwhile the boat went on for 15 miles to Chichester.

A lifejacket would be a good investment particularly when it is used.
How many times would he have to think before putting a life jacket on without thinking.
