That whole BBC story is complete tosh......it's picking the bits it wants to that make for a story to show how bad insurers are....

If it was a genuine balls up by insurer or broker the FSA would have been all over it. I feel for the guy...but trying to find blame with others isn't right....

I think I may have mentioned my view of said broker...but was taken to task for my views....so tend not to say Bugger all now.

I'll get my coat.....

RIBase
+1 for Porthcawl.
And, and......they paid up well when some dingbat crashed his yacht onto my console. Cost them best part of £7k.
Paid up VERY promptly and with no rise in premium AND with no excess either as I had "Marina Cover".
Cant speak too highly of them.

Hi all thanks for all the advise and I've gone with Porthcawl did me a really good deal.

I've been looking at fitting a screen to my Rib and I've ended up using a bike screen I think it looks ok works well when we are on the water.

Was renewing my insurance last night and this under 18 thing had me worried! Renewed with Porthcawl rather than Towergate as they say they cover under 18's IF I am proved to be negligent as the skipper/boat owner so I guess I would be if anyone hurt themselves. I was quite worried about this as I like taking friends and their kids out etc for a spin and ringo etc but don't want to risk losing the house if they got hurt. Might well have sold the boat or changed the usage a lot if I could not get insurance. It would smart to lose the value of the boat but would not want to lose the house or for someone who needed money due to broken spine etc to not get some money.
Renewal was quite reasonable too, probably chocka full of loopholes but hey ho I was reassured enough to get the credit card out!

It's a shame we have to dig deep to find out if our insurance up to the job everything should be honest and straight forward or is that just asking too much from any company these days :-(

Its an interesting one ..there were several cases in the last few yeas where insurers tried to rely on 'read you policy wording' type coverall statements that the court have said were not acceptable. In such that if you go via a broker (which I do recommend) they are under some obligation from the FCA ( ex FSA) to point out specific warranties/ conditions/ exclusions of cover ....

Oh getting carried away again.....

Update, turns out that last week when I used the online renewal it did not work and I have been using the boat uninsured! Caught in today when they rang me to chase up why I had not renewed!
