Rib Insurance..
Not the most exciting topic, until you need to call upon it..
So who do you use for your insurance? also the question of hull design speed...
I guess our next boat will be capable of high 40 / low 50 its but i really don't know. it seems that +45 its is the threshold where additional premiums are charged?
Any recommendations on who to contact for quotes, its been a few years since we had any cover.
Thanks in advance.
Zippy.

I've used Bishop Skinner, they were really very good when it came to making a claim for consequential damage, felt they actually fought my corner.

+1 for Dean. Great if you need a tailored policy or have any commercial use.
As to speed, some companies have a 50 knot cut off above which they won't offer cover.
Had one personal injury claim (none of the mainstream insurers) we looked into involving vertebrae fracture in a very fast rib. The rib was clearly a 50 knot plus boat - owner told us 57 knots. Policy had a limit of 50 knots. The claim was initially declined although I think it went to the Ombudsman and they were interested on what was said on the phone when the policy was taken out.
Make sure you ask the question before you take out cover!

Very straightforward claims guys there that we often work for.

All insurance companies are helpful when you sign up with them but I've actually had two claims in the last 15 years. Both of these were handled successfully by Porthcawl Insurance, they are rib specialists and I've found them to be excellent and competitive on premiums.

+1 for Porthcawl! I've been with them for 2 years now - reasonable prices for good cover of boat on and off the water, trailering and the occasional overnight alongside in a marina. Fortunately I've not had to claim, fingers crossed this continues.

+1 for Porthcawl.
I only moved from them to Bishop Skinner as we had the kids sailing dinghies with Bishop Skinner - and they would do a pseudo multi-boat policy.
4 boats, one policy

+1 more for Porthcawl. Had to claim for a write off in 2005 and all settled quickly and fairly. Go for the agreed value policy if you can - at least you know what you are paying for and if $%!t happens you know what you will get paid out

Yeah, the agreed value is good, but only counts towards the whole boat (and trailer if on that at the time) being written off/stolen. If the engine alone is stolen (for example) then you get market value, less loss adjustment for the age of the engine, etc. I checked with them when renewing mine this year. They did tell me that the assessor would look at the engine's value but also take into account the cost of renewing like for like.
In short - if someone steals your engine, make your boat disappear too!
Porthcawl however were the only company that would offer agreed value for my boat, with it being 2003. HKJ, for example, wouldn't as it's too old for their policy.

Porthcawl for me, I did some shopping around and they matched the lowest price without any hassle, documents all came on time, english support and on calls (sorry I know not PC but I cant stand overseas call centres as they are so much more hassle).
All good experience so far with Porthcawl.

I'm with noble marine. Very cheap premium but seems comprehensive.
Haven't had to claim but they cover the outboard when it's off the boat and locked away or on the boat as long as there's a wheel clamp on the trailer.

Lots of recommendations for Porthcawl and I am currently with them but due for renewal this week. Not sure everybody else is aware but you can only stay within 12 miles of the shore as any further a aux motor is required for insurance which may not suit me this year as I may have some offshore visits planned for this year so I will try to Dean as mentioned in earlier posts and am open to other recommendations?

Porthcawl are a broker, so (I) should be able to arrange cover to suit your requirements (II) not everyone with Porthcawl will have the same requirements. However 12 miles is a fairly common restriction, and if you are going that far solo, an Aux isn't a crazy idea!

Mercia Marine, very flexible, no restrictions re.distance offshore etc. Agreed value with all items listed separately i.e. Hull, engines, trailer, electronics. So each item is individually insured for an agreed value. Unerwriters are "in house" so can agree changes on the spot, or at least within minutes. I've called them out of hours for a change to the policy & been diverted to the underwriter who has agreed the changes on the phone, followed up by an email, can't fault 'em. You gets what you pays for.

I work for Alan & Thomas Insurance Brokers so maybe a bit biased, however we have been very competitive for a number of forum members (me included) so feel free to give us a go.
I know John in the marine division is getting a trade account set up and is looking to put together a scheme for Ribnet users so watch this space.
