Rib Insurance for Alderney trip

Guys,

Although the previous thread reminded me to speak with my insurance company about the forthcoming trip to Alderney this month. I though that thread has had its day, although .

I am with Westfield Sub Aqua and Marine Insurance Ltd which is underwritten by AXA, when I advised them that there are a number of boats doing the trip together the response from AXA was my boat is too small and they will not cover it.

Westfield have done all they can and very helpful and disappointed with AXA's response.

Therefore, I need to change Insurance companies, and to save me a lot of calling and time those of you who have this level of cover can you please advise who you are with. PeterM - please feel free to comment

I do not have an Aux engine for those companies that require this and have my PBL2 cert.

Cheers

Alex

I'm with Haven Knox-Johnson through the brokers Bay Marine Insurance in Cardiff. I've had two large claims which were processed and settled very promptly.

The policy covers all coastal and inland waters of the UK and of Europe north of the latitude of La Rochelle in France and west of the longitude of The Elbe in Germany. That meant that I was fully covered for my trip to Paris last year.

Somewhat oddly, "coastal waters" is not defined in the policy but is probably up to 12 miles off shore. Even at 30 miles, that still leaves an uninsured gap in the middle of any direct Channel crossing from Poole. The brokers, however, obtained an endorsement on the policy from the insurers at no extra cost to confirm that the insurance covers all parts of the Channel so that I can undertake Channel crossings without having to make special arrangements with the insurers.

Let's hope that the weather improves so that we can do the Alderney run and look forward to meeting you.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for your response, I have just called them and given the dates of Alderney trip, they did recall offering an endorsement to someone but that person had "considerable experience"! So in my case with 12 months they will not provide the cover to a newbie despite the convoy of boats traveling together.

Unless anyone can recommend another insurance company, I am going to have to get on the blower and play insurance roulette!

My previous post was from memory so I thought I'd check before reposting (accuracy being apparently at a premium now on Ribnet!) but my insurance covers from La Rochelle (as previously posted by me) which is quoted in the policy as being (although slightly north of) latitude N46.00 (rather than Brest which is N48.23).

This is actually quite a lot more generous as it gives access to the whole of Southern Brittany and the Vendee coast within the premium: it's just a matter of getting there!

Anyone up for it next year?

(Oh .... if anyone's interested: latitude N48.23 (Brest) covers Paris anyway!)

RIBase
Just out of interest, our insurance covers us from the Canaries to Norway, there are specific lat/longs detailing where exactly but other than that there is no limit from a safe haven. I think the same applies to the 2.6m Cadet!

I'm with Porthcawl - just checked with them, my insurance only covers coastal waters (12 miles of land) - They won't cover me for Alderney without an aux engine - which A: I don't have and B: even if I did not sure I could fit it anywhere.

They said it was due to the boat size - if it was 6 meters+ wouldn't be a requirement. They are worried about not being able to maintain heading up to sea & being caught broadside in a large swell (which they rate at 1.5m +)

I guess I can see (no pun intended) their point but think they are a little cautious in what they call a large swell.

Yes, but give them a call for a quote they may do it and they should remember me and AJ taking out the policy the other day.

I'm with Towergate Mardon.
Last year they insured me on a trip to Guernsey, I think they charged £40-£50. My rib is 5.5 , wasn't an issue at all.
