Have you seen the hydrostatic key fobs that self-inflate in water (like a life jacket)?
Lymington Yacht haven were giving away really useful floating foam keyfobs last year - flat, unlike the awkward cork ball ones.

This one isn't hydrostatic, but it has a powder inside that dissolves/reacts to make it inflate.
I can't remember what weight of keys they will surface with.
It's kind of like a SCUBA divers SMB.

Delivery is expensive though :-(

Ive got one of those but its not very well made and fell apart. I stuck it back together with tape so I think the chances of it actually working if I dropped my keys in the water are quite low.

My floating key fob is made out from the cork out of the champagne bottle the boat was named with, which I thought was a nice touch by the original owner

I think so, I am pretty sure I tried it in a bucket when I first got the boat but now you mention it I will check it again! There is only the ignition key which is tiny, a plastic battery isolator key and a small alloy carabiner so the whole lot is quite light. Keys for house and work stay in a safe place as you would need a small mooring buoy to keep that lot up!
