I had a Freelander 2 and mine wasn't crap, didn't go round corners too well but could pull anything.
As for the Disco, had a digger picked up last week and the bloke said his Disco was the only 4x4 that could tow a 3.5 ton digger.

No idea about the Defender but my mate has a LandCruiser and he can't tow over 3 tons. Can't believe the local plant firm would buy a Disco 4 unless they had to.
