When you do broach and the boom 'wangs' across, what is the likelyhood of a crew mwmber getting hit. I have done a lot of sailing, but very little racing, and that has always concerned me.

Very great, you learn to keep your head down after the first-if you survive.
It was must be one of the most frequent accidents requiring man over board drill and/or medical attention

Selling the Melges after 5 years, lookes like its going to Norway, When i bought the hoist, the idea was to use for other things, all i have to do, is change the front bunk, to fit the hull Vee
Thanks all, that the info i was looking for, was working on around the ton and half mark, Barnet, recon you can go about 10 longer that the 6 meter for the 2.5 hoist, so will be looking around the 6.5-7 mt mark,
Not check engine weights, but presume outboards are lighter the inboard's?
Regards Tim

Hi Tim,
You're welcome for a blast in my rib when you are in the area. Mine's kept in Brixham, although it is due out in the next few weeks to have a scrub and anti-foul.
Good luck with your new purchase
Colin

It's probably accounted for more injuries during a blowy Cowes Week than anything else - a couple in recent years have been unfortunately fatal. One of the problems is that crew generally don't wear life jackets and a rather large thump on the head followed by an involuntry face down immersion makes MOB recovery a vital part of racing skills.

Hi Andy,,
in a word "High" but the helmsman, normally has a little warning, he can feel the rudder loose grip, just before she goes, and can give a shout !!,
The Melges are not too bad in a broach, she will just lay there,on her beam, waiting for the crew to sort themselves out,
Only "caught" me once, the crew reckon I was out for about a minute, in the bottom of the boat,,never happened again (fingers crossed)
Unfortunately, what hard1 says,is very correct,,our MOB drill, is practiced 4/6 times a year. and always with a new crew member !!

Our 7.7m BananaShark would fit on there no problem - 225 Optimax no fuel 1200 kg. (that's the leisure not the race version!)

No idea sorry, the only pointer i can give is David Hickmans 6.5m ribcraft with a Honda 175 is very close weight wise, but he has all the coding kit on his. I would stab a guess in the 1400kg area but could be way out really!!!

The boat has a large console, 4 pod seats and double stainless-steel A frame, so it's not a particularly light RIB!
Your proposed 6.5 should be well within your 2.5 tonne limit.
Hope that helps.
