Bob, I had a major operation in February 2016 (12 hours on the table) and ended up with a cut across my abdomen from one side to the other after having part of an internal organ removed. The Surgeon advised against any rough water ribbing for three months and said it would be six months for a full recovery. I know people who have had by-pass surgery and were given roughly the same time scale advice. I am on blood thinning tablets too.
Four months after the surgery we did a two week rib holiday in Scotland crossing the Minch in some rough weather and doing about 800 miles in total around the Hebrides and Summer Isles. I was just careful not to over exert myself but your wounds heal after about 12 weeks in any case. I just took any wave impact on half bent knees. Standing up rigidly is the worst thing that you can do and sitting down fully isn’t my favourite, although it’s the RYA taught position.
Like previous comments, you’ll be in better shape than you were before the operation so start living the rest of your life. If you needed Bypass surgery then something would be more likely to go wrong before the surgery than after it. Just don’t try winching any ribs off the mud by yourself for a while.
I wish you a successful operation, a quick recovery and a speedy return to ribbing.
By the way, while you have your enforced period of rest, why don’t you get the books out and if you haven’t got it already, get your Day Skipper or Yachtmaster theory done. It beats watching Jeremy Kyle every morning.

Sounds like the surgeon pulled out all the stops. You're bound to be more comfortable now.

There's too much of this about at the moment - I'm just home after chemo and major surgery. I don't think there's a limit to future ribbing for you as long as you manage it sensibly.
I'm having to take very early retirement but every cloud and all that, we're going to buy a marina house on the Isle of Wight. I'll need a bigger rib but I think coffee in Osbourne Bay rather than 2 hours in a Gecko helmet to catch a mackerel from now on. If I get one with a picnic table do I get expelled from this forum?

Depends, if it’s a black picnic table, you’ll be fine. If it’s fake teak with blue piping....it’s not looking good[emoji6]

I wondered how long it’d be before someone piped up.

September will be great - I’ve thought this one through and you need some good stuff to look forward to.
We’ve booked a few days in Dunoon and then on to Jura in September.
As long as the weather doesn’t really kick off, otherwise we’ll take our walking boots instead.
