rip-off: dummy cashier's cheque

CAUTION ! more and more dummy certified cashier's cheques are circulating. They are so well imitated ( embossed paper, stamps, ... ) that even professional cashiers can not make the difference with a genuine one. When you will be notified by your banker that the cheque has bounced, your RIB will be far away already !

NEVER accept a cashier's cheque if you are not able to immediately check if it is valid (e.g. during a WE) !!!!!!!!!!

See also my post dated 16 February about another kind of rip-off.

When I bought my rib from Mike in Herne bay I did an electronic fund transfer to his bank. But a week later I bought an E class estate from a guy in Essex and paid by bank draft. I faxed the cheque to him and he and his bank cleared it with my bank. On the day of collection he again checked it with his bank. We were all happy with both deals.

Fortunately there still are honest buyers !!!

Faxing a copy of the cheque to the seller to allow him to have it checked prior to the delivery is a great idea and should become some kind of standard procedure when buyer and seller live far away from each other.

However, you must know that in some cases, when the buyer's bank is not located in a member country of the EEC, that may take several weeks to validate a cheque: getting no reply from the bank within a couple of days does not mean that the cheque is dummy !
